1. Based on physical state

Solid
e.g. Graphite, Fullerenes, Talk, Finely powdered send, Cement,
Clay, Wax, Teflon etc.

Liquid
e.g. Water, Animal oil, Vegetable oil, Mineral oil, Solvents, Blended
oil, Synthetic oil, emulsion etc.

Semi-solid
e.g. Grease, Gel, Oildag, Aquadag, Ointment, Toothpaste etc.
2. Based on mechanism

Thick film / Hydrodynamic / Fluid film lubrication


e.g. Watches, Clocks, Sewing machines, Delicate and scientific
instruments etc.

Thin film / Boundary lubrication


e.g. Cars, Bikes, Scooters, Domestic lubrication, Automobiles,
Mechanical parts etc.

Extreme pressure lubrication


e.g. Heavy applications, Multi-axle vehicles, Road rollers, JCBs,
Elevators, war tanks etc.
