All patients have the right to be treated with consideration and respect – free from mental
or physical abuse. The right to freedom from abuse applies even when the patients
behaviour toward the staff is abusive.
Verbal abuse – whether out of frustration or an attempt to force the patient into a
particular behaviour – is not only a violation of patient rights, but is an ineffective way of
dealing with patients.
Physical abuse, such as pushing or hitting the patients, is never permitted, including
attempts to control behaviour through corporal punishment.
The patient has to be free from physical restraints, expect in an emergency situation or
when the use of such restraints is part of a care plan agreed upon by the patient. The
convenience of the staff is not a valid reason for using restraints. In all cases, the use of
such restraints must have a specified time limit and the least restrictive method must be
used.
The right to move around freely is essential to the patient’s self-esteem and emotional
well-being and should be encouraged whenever possible.
In addition, psychoactive drugs are not to be used for purpose of discipline or for the
convenience of the staff.
Instead of expressing your frustration, deal with the patient in a respectful and matter-of-
fact manner.
