6.8 Recipe definition

The recipe is the set of parameters characterizing a product that the weigher shall be
able to treat. The grouping of all these parameters in a recipe allows to easily pass
from one product to the other, without getting every time into the details of the single
parameters.
The VENTOCHECK™ can store up to 40 different recipes.
The recipe can be directly created and set by using the VENTOCHECK™ weighing
control unit, or it can be automatically received by a supervisor by means of a Bitbus
or Canbus network.
The main parameters of a recipe are the nominal weight (target) of the bag being
produced and the weight limits allowed, beyond which the bag shall be rejected.
The VENTOCHECK™ can handle a bags rejection group by means of a digital output.
As for the details of all the recipe parameters that can be set, see paragraph 6.9.

6.9.2.1 Name
It is a string of maximum 6 characters identifying the recipe.
6.9.2.2 Nominal weight
NOMINAL: It is the theoretical net weight. The weigher evaluates the weight error of
the bag by comparing it with the value obtained from: Nominal Weight + Weight of
the bag.
6.9.2.3 Limits
LOW.LIM.1 (first lower limit) and UPP.LIM.1 (first upper limit): they define the range of
the “good” bags, comprised between Nominal Weight – 1st Lower Limit and Nominal
Weight + 1st Upper Limit.

LOW.LIM.2 (second lower limit) and UPP.LIM.2 (second upper limit): they define the
bags that are not included in the first threshold but that are comprised between
Nominal Weight – 2nd Lower Limit and Nominal Weight + 2nd Upper Limit.

The limits are expressed related to the nominal weight.

The decision to reject or not the bags comprised within the second threshold or
exceeding the second threshold depends on the setting parameters of the bags
rejection group.

6.9.2.4 Bag lenght

BAG LENGTH: it is the length of the bag expressed in mm. The entered value has no
influence whatsoever.
6.9.2.5 Bag weight
BAG WEIGHT: it is the weight of the empty bag. The weigher therefore will consider
the net weight equal to: Weight Detected – Weight of the bag.

6.9.2.6 Dynamic correction of the weight

CORRECTION: since the weight detected in motion can be slightly different from the
value detected statically, this parameter allows to set a correction value.
This parameter is linked to the recipe, since its value depends on the weight and on
the type of bag used.

6.9.2.7 Waiting time before sampling

SAM. W. TIME: it is the waiting time before beginning the sampling, after the bag has
disengaged the inlet photocell. This time value, which is generally comprised between
100 and 300 msec, allows to cut the first milliseconds, which are generally the most
disturbed ones (typical value 200 ms).

6.9.2.8 Bag waiting time

This parameter is only valid if the unit has a network connection with the packer:
in this case there will be a continuous information exchange between the electronic
system of the packer and the VENTOCHECK™ unit, in order to associate each bag
that will be weighed on the control weigher with the outlet that filled it, both to
correct the weight of the bags produced by the single filling units and to outline a
detailed statistics of the produced bags spout by spout.
Select the item BAG WAITING TIME on the recipe menu; you enter a further sub-
menu, where you can set the time or require its automatic detection by the unit itself.

SET: the current setting of this parameter allows to recognize from which spout of the
packer was evacuated the bag now passing on the weigher. The parameter expresses
in milliseconds the time interval between the evacuation and the arrival of the bag
at the first inlet photocell of the weigher. The value is generally comprised between
5000 and 8000 msec.

MEASURE: it automatically measures the time interval between the evacuation of the
bag and its arrival at the inlet photocell.
How to perform the measurement:
• before selecting this control, empty the packer and the path from it to the
control weigher;
• select MEASURE;
• produce a bag from the packer and wait for the bag to pass on the control
weigher;
• the value now displayed under MEASURE shall be set in the recipe in the same
menu item for the machines without network connection, and on the control panel
of the packer for the machines with network connection (see the relevant manual).

6.10.2.1 Definitions

It is possible to define two time values for the bag set on the scale pan that stopped
engaging the input photocell:
WAITING TIME time during which the measured weight is variable;
SAMPLING TIME time during which the sampling takes place; this is interrupted when
the inlet photocell is engaged by a new bag or when the bag weighed engages the
outlet photocell.

Waiting time Sampling time

6.12

The bags normally arrive on the weigher at a constant pace. A proper operation is
ensured when only one bag passes onto the weigher pan for the time required to
carry out the sampling.
Sometimes, however, a bag may arrive too close to the bag preceding it; in this case
the weighing process cannot be the best, or it could even be impossible.

In the first case we speak of unpaced bags,

6.11.2.2 Delay (ms)

The bags rejection group is activated through a digital output of the control unit
EWU/010. Since the bags rejection group is at a certain distance from the weigher,
from the moment the bag is recognized as a bag to be rejected a time interval shall
pass before the bags rejection group is activated. Such time value varies according
to the plant and the parameter value is expressed in milliseconds (typical values are
700 up to 2000 msec.).

6.11.2.3 Duration (ms)

This parameter, expressed in milliseconds, defines the duration of the activation pulse
of the bags rejection group (typical value is 400 msec.).

6.11.2.4 Maximum number of rejections

When the number of consecutive rejections, expressed by this parameter, is exceeded,
an alarm is activated which stops production (typical value ranges from 5 up to 10).

6.11.2.5 Thresholds %
This menu allows to define the general limits, having the same meaning of those
described in the recipe parameters, although they are expressed in percentage of the
nominal value. Such limits shall be used in one particular case only, that is when the
recipe is sent by a supervisor without the relevant limit parameters (see paragraph
6.9.2.3).
In this case, once the weigher receives the recipe the limits are automatically set by
using these parameters, as a percentage of the nominal value.

6.11.3 Weighing
SET SW FILTER: it allows to set the software filter acting on the weight value shown
with the belt stopped. The filter acts like a normal two-stage filter: FIR and IIR.
The values that can be set are 3:
• nFIR (1 to 32) it indicates the number of samples on which to calculate the
mobile average;
• aIIR (1 to 32) weight given to the current value;
• bIIR (1 to 32) weight given to the previous value.

SET HW FILTER: it sets a filter in the weighing HW module. The filter acts like a
normal two-stage filter: FIR and IIR.
The values that can be set are 3:
• nFIR (0 to 32) it indicates the number of samples on which to calculate the
mobile average;
• aIIR (0 to 32) weight given to the current value;
• bIIR (0 to 32) weight given to the previous value.

SAM.W.TIME: it is the waiting time after the bag has passed the inlet photocell before
starting the sampling of the weight. This parameter is also present as a parameter
linked to the recipe (see menu recipes).
The value set is only used if the corresponding parameter in the recipe is set to zero.
This default value is used when the recipe is received from a supervisor that does not
transmit this parameter.

6.11.4 Offset trk

During the production of the bags some product may remain on the weigher, altering
the bag weight detected. The OFFSET TRACKING is the capacity of the weigher to
adapt the zero level, so to always give the exact weight.

The weigher uses the inlet and outlet photocells, together with the information relating
to the belt operation in order to know if the pan of the weigher is free, and therefore
if it is possible to acquire the new zero value. Sometimes, however, if the plant works
under maximum productivity conditions, the pan might never be free, and too much
time might elapse before the zero level is updated. This fact could cause errors during
the weighing process.

To avoid this situation, the weigher can request to the packer an evacuation stop, so
to have a time gap allowing the detection of the zero value.

The OFFSET TRK menu allows the setting of some parameters adjusting this process.

The parameters are the following:

ENABLE it allows to enable or disable the offset tracking;
DELAY TIME it is the waiting time expressed in milliseconds since the exit of the latest
bag, before starting the measuring of the zero level;
FILTER it allows to set the software filter acting on the values collected during the
calculation of the offset (see paragraph 6.11.4.1);

6.11.4.1 Filter
The filter acts like a normal two-stage filter: FIR and IIR
The values that can be set are 3:
• nFIR (1 to 127) it indicates the number of samples on which to calculate the
mobile average;
• aIIR (0 to 32) weight given to the current value - if the parameter is =0, the IIR
stage does not work, therefore it only acts as a mobile average;
• bIIR (1 to 127) weight given to the previous value.

6.11.5 Weighing correction

When the weigher is able to recognize the evacuation spout to which the bag being
weighed belongs, it may occur that some evacuation spout shows a systematic weight
error. In this case the weigher can send to the packer some information, in order to
correct the set point of the spout.
This menu adjusts the parameters of this process. The submenu shows the following
entries:

6.11.5.2 Correction factor

It is a percentage factor establishing the weight to be given to the correction
The correction is sent to the packer with a correction factor.
If, for example, the weigher registers for one particular evacuation spout a weight
which is different from the nominal weight of 800 g, with a correction factor equal
to 50 a correction of 400 g will be sent.

6.11.5.3 Minimum correction

It defines a limit to the negative correction that can be sent.
If the parameter is set to –1000g and the calculated correction is –1200g, a correction
of –1000g will be sent. The process is cyclic, the weight of the bag is checked once
again and the missing correction -200g is sent.

6.11.5.4 Maximum correction

As for parameter minimum correction, it defines a limit to the maximum correction.

6.11.5.5 Filter
The filter acts like a normal two-stage filter: FIR and IIR.
The values that can be set are 3:
• nFIR (0 to 32) it indicates the number of samples on which to calculate the
mobile average;
• aIIR (0 to 32) weight given to the current value - if the parameter is =0, the IIR

6.11.6.1 Enable
ENABLE: to enable or disable spout recognition.

6.11.6.2 Tolerance
TOLERANCE: it is the tolerance allowed on the bag arrival time after the evacuation
(typical value 300 msec.).

6.11.6.3 Tolerance 2
TOLERANCE 2: it is the tolerance allowed on the bag arrival time after the evacuation,
in the event the bag arriving is the bag being waited. Its value generally exceeds the
value of tolerance (typical value 800 msec.).

6.11.6.4 Bag waiting time

BAG WAITING TIME.: time for bag arrival after evacuation; by correctly setting this
parameter it is possible to recognize from which spout of the packer was evacuated the
bag currently passing onto the weigher. The parameter expresses in milliseconds the
time interval between the evacuation and the arrival of the bag at the first photocell.
This time value can be automatically measured. To do so it is first necessary to check
that the path from the packer to the weigher does not contain any bag; then, by
selecting MEASURE, the time interval between the evacuation and the detection of
the photocell will be measured (typical value is comprised between 5000 and 8000
msec.).

6.13.2 Dynamic calibration

The dynamic calibration is used in order to find the best parameters for the weighing
process, which shall be entered into a recipe.
The process foresees to weigh 10 bags in a dynamic way, that is under normal
production conditions. The same bags are then statically weighed, and the relevant
weights are entered in the VENTOCHECK™. By processing these data the system
supplies the optimal value to be entered in the recipe for the parameters Sam.W.Time
and Correction.

These parameters are the waiting time before sampling and the dynamic correction
(see paragraphs 6.9.2.6 and 6.9.2.7).

6.13.2.1 Start
The START command activates the dynamic weighing process. The control
automatically goes to the page displaying the weighing, where the last line shows the
number of the bag weighed: 1/10, 2/10 …. 10/10.
Once 10 bags are weighed, the plant shall be stopped, and the bags shall be statically
weighed with the help of a static control scale (in the absence of which you can use
the VENTOCHECK™ itself),carefully respecting the weighing order (we suggest you
to number the bags).

The weights registered by the static control scale shall be manually entered in the
control unit, so to allow the weigher to execute the dynamic calibration algorithm.
For this purpose move the cursor on the item SET W.
Two numeric values are displayed in the same line:
• the value on the left indicates the sequence number of the bag, in the order in
which it passes on the scale during the phase of dynamic acquisition;
• the value on the right indicates the weight of the bag in grams as it has been
statically detected and manually input in the unit.

the line SET W. has assumed the value just set. To modify the next bags press keys
BACK and FORWARD and the number of the bag SET W. will change.
Once the weights are entered, select CALCULATE to automatically have the optimal
value of the mentioned parameters.
The parameters SAM.W.TIME and CORRECTION shall then be manually entered in

7.5 Lubrication of the reduction gears

The oil-lubricated reduction gears are provided with filling plug, oil level and drain
plugs.
Periodically check (when the reduction gear is not working) the level of lubricant, and
change the oil every 12000 hours after accurately washing the reduction gear with
fluid oil and mineral naphtha.
In case of synthetic oil lubrication, wash the inside of the reduction gear so as to remove
any trace of mineral running-in oil and avoid any risk of lubricant saponification.
Avoid filling too much the casing of the reduction gear.
This would cause energy dissipation, thus damaging the reduction gear.
