1 Chronicles 23:18 records Shelomith
as the son of Izhar.
Zelophehad is described as the second
son of Manasseh in 1 Chronicles 7:15.
The Hebrew phrase for "the name of
the second was Zelophehad ( ‫ְצ ָל ְפחָד‬
‫ּׁשנִי ְוׁשֵם‬
ֵ ‫ ) ַה‬is translated in NIV as
"Another descendant was named."
Zelophehad only had five daughters
and no son to be his heir (Num 27:1;
36:11; Josh 17:3), but his daughters
came before Moses and received the
promise of their inheri- tance (Num
27:1-11). Then, they received their
allotment from Joshua after the
Canaanite conquest (Josh 17:4-6).
They preserved their inheritance (Num
36:10-12) by marrying within the tribe
of Manasseh as commanded by the
Lord through Moses (Num 36.5-9).
This incident brought to light the
impor- tance of the covenantal
inheritance and became an exemplary
model during times when
intermarriages with Gentiles was a
problem (Ezra 9:1-2, 11-15) It is
presumed that his name is especially
mentioned in 1 Chronicles 7:15. "And
the name of the second was
Zelophehad." for emphasis and
reminder.
There were 11 generations from Judah
to David. The year of Judah's birth
was approx. 1919 BC, and the year of
David's birth was approx. 1040 BC. It
is implausible to say that there were
only 11 gen- erations in the span of
about 879 years. Thus, it is presumed
that there may be generations that
were omitted in the record of the
genealogy
Korah grouped with Dathan, Abiram
and On, along with 250 leaders of the
congregation, and rose up against
Moses and Aaron. Then, the earth
opened up its mouth and swallowed
them up alive (Num 16:1- 35), but
Korah's sons were not killed (Num
26:10-11). His descendants were in
charge of singing praises in the
temple, guarding the threshold of the
tent, and providing other services (1
Chr 9:19, 31, 26:1).
