1 OBJECTIVE
The objective of this PROCEDURE is to establish guidelines which will help to reduce the risk of
injury to personnel and damage to property arising from the operation of various types of vehicles at
KML.

2 SCOPE
This PROCEDURE applies to all employees and contractors who are required to operate at KML.

3 INTRODUCTION
3.1 ACTS AND REGULATIONS

KML is committed to providing safe operations for all Emergency Procedure on Mining equipment
activities and has established PROCEDURE and guidelines to reduce risk of injury to personnel and
damage to property.
This procedure assists employees and contractors to improve their safety and meet the various
Zambian Statutory and government agency requirements

4 Guidelines
All employees and contractors wishing to operate a vehicle or operate any piece of
equipment on KML site must meet the following requirements;

Successfully complete the basic operators/driver competency assessment with 80% Pass.

Light Vehicle Drivers must hold a valid driver’s licence from his/her country of origin.

Must abide by all the site driving rules and regulations as outlined in the policy.

Must observe the national road traffic rules.

Light Vehicle Drivers must be certified and be in possession of a site driving permit valid for
the zone in which he/she is expected to drive.

Employees and contractors required to work in the active mining areas must complete the
Mining Induction Program in addition to the standard Site Induction.

Employees and contractors required to drive in the active mining areas will need to be in
possession of a valid site specific Active Mining Area Driving Permit.
4.1 Safety
 Correct PPE should be worn at all times.

 Access and egress, always maintain three points of contact.

 No person is allowed to climb on a machine while it’s in motion.

 Seat belts must be worn at all times.

 Lower all implements to the ground when the machine is not in use or if people and/or other
machines enter within the reach 50m exclusion zone of the excavator.

4.2 Licensing and authorisation


 Only approved and appointed permit holders may operate equipment for which their permits
are valid.

 Maintenance personnel must be trained and hold a valid “Move and Test” permit for the
equipment they are expected to operate.

 A thorough Pre-start inspection must be completed before using any equipment

5.0 General
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES ON MINING EQUIPMENT IN CASE OF POWER LOSS OR ENGINE CUT
OUT ON A RAMP

5.1 Dump truck


 Use the emergency, retarder and service brakes to stop the truck.
 Keep foot on the service brakes and engage the parking brake.
 Turn wheels towards the safety berm.
 Report to Dispatch that your truck has broken down and the location
 The operator must not leave the cab of the truck and must keep the brakes engaged until
help arrives
 Do not reverse down a ramp.
 Do not tip the load on the ramp
 Use the emergency steering to steer the truck to a safe place.
 .

5.2 Grader
 Lower blade and ripper into the ground and apply pressure
 Apply the parking brake, keep foot on the foot brakes.
 Turn the wheels towards the safety berm.
 Call for help on the radio and report to control
 Do not leave the cab.

5.3 Water truck, Fuel truck, Explosive and Flat trucks


 Use foot brake to stop truck, engaged the park brakes and select 1 st gear.

 Keep foot on the brakes.


 Turn the wheels towards the safety berm.
 Call for help on the radio and report to control
 The operator must stay in the cab until help arrives.

5.4 Light motor vehicle


 Use foot break to stop the vehicle, select 1 st gear and engage the park brakes.
 Turn the wheels towards the safety berm
 Call for help on the radio and report to control.
 Stay inside the cab until help arrives.

5.5 Maintenance vehicle


 Use foot and emergency brakes to stop truck.
 Turn wheels towards the safety berm.
 Engage the park brakes.
 Call for help on the radio and report to control room.
 The driver must stay inside the cab until help arrives.

5.6 Loader
 Use foot brake to stop loader.
 Engaged the neutralizer brakes with your foot.
 Turn wheels towards the safety berm.
 Lower the bucket to the ground surface.
 Call for help on the radio and report to control room.
 The operator must stay inside the cab until help arrives.

5.7 Dozer
 Release the levers and put into neutral position, use the foot brake to stop the dozer, keep
foot on foot brake.
 Engage park brakes.
 Lower the blade and ripper to the ground surface
 Call for help on the radio and report to control.
 The operator must stay inside the cab until help arrives.

5.8 Drill rig


 Release the leavers and put into neutral position, use foot brakes to stop the drill rig, keep
foot on foot brake.
 Lower the stabilizer jacks to the ground surface.
 Call for help on the radio and report to control.
 The operator must stay inside the cab until help arrives.

5.9 Articulated dump truck


 Use foot brakes to stop the truck, keep foot on the brakes.
 Engage the park and emergency brakes.
 Call for help on the radio and report to control.
 The operator must stay inside the cab until help arrives.

Note: the purpose of the park brakes is only to keep the truck from moving on a level surface after the
equipment is parked, the park brakes will not keep any equipment stationary on any ramp.
Do not work or walk around any equipment while parked on a ramp.
