The Musical Alphabet


In music we use the first 7 letters of the alphabet: A B C D E F G
The Piano has a repeating pattern of black and white keys which we use to find the names of
the white keys:

INTERVALS
An interval is the distance between pitches
Different intervals have different names
Whole Tone Intervals on the Piano

Whole tone intervals are also known as whole steps or tone intervals
A Tone is an interval where there is only one key in-between (on a piano)
Semitone Intervals on the Piano

Semitones are also known as half steps.


With a semitone interval there is no key in-between two notes (on a piano)
The Following shows a labelled piano. Answer the questions that follow:

1. What is the name of the interval between C and D it is a Whole tone.


2. What is the name of the interval between D and E it is a Whole tone.
3. What is the name of the interval between E and F it is a Semi tone.
4. What is the name of the interval between F and G it is a Whole tone.
