VI. Concept notes with formative activities

A research question is a question that a research sets out to answer. It is a question that
provides an explicit statement of what the researcher wants to find out about. This is the
fundamental core of a research or study. It focuses the study, determines the methodology, and
guides all stages of inquiry, analysis and reporting.
The research question is an essential guide in conducting a research. It pinpoints exactly
what you want to find out and gives your work a clear focus and purpose.
The answer to a research question will help address a research problem or
question. Specifying a research question, "the central issue to be resolved," is typically one of the
first steps a researcher takes when undertaking a research. Clearly and accurately defining the
research question can become an iterative process. How the question is constructed can depend
on the type of research or discipline.

1
The research question serves two purposes:
1. It determines where and what kind of research the writer will be looking for.
2. It identifies the specific objectives the study or paper will address.
While preparing questions, it is essential to which question falls under which heading to
increase the efficiency and accuracy of the research. One must be acquainted with the types of
research question, before going into the samples of research questions. There are three types of
research questions namely, descriptive, comparative and causal.
1. Descriptive Research Questions. Descriptive researches are used to assist a study that
aims to describe something. For example, polls conducted on public opinions. The aim of this
study is to understand the public various opinions, which are mainly descriptive. Questions
starting with “How much?”, “What amount?”, “what is”, “what are” etc. comes under the
heading of descriptive research questions. Here are some examples of descriptive research:
a. How many calories do Filipinos consume in a week?
b. How often do Filipino students obtain foreign university scholarships?
2. To analyze the difference between two or more groups, on the dependent variables, we
use comparative research questions. Comparative research questions begin with “what is the
difference between?’’. It may look into the distinguishing features of a variable upon different
groups. A study to determine the proportion of males and females, who would vote for two
different political parties, is a comparative research. Now, here are some examples for
comparative research questions;
a. What is the difference of daily intake of calorie of Filipino men and women?
b. What is the difference of computer usage between ABM students and STEM
students of Ilocos Sur National High School?
3. Causal Research Questions. When a research is aimed to find out whether a variable
causes one or more outcome variables, it is called a casual or relationship research. It is the
study of cause and effect. The causal research questions try to identify the relationship between
different variables upon one or more groups. The two objectives of causality research are
identifying the cause and variables affected by it. Some examples of causal research questions
are as follow:
a. What is the relationship between age and attitudes towards online dating among youth?
b. What is the relationship between leisure time and mental health among teens?
