BIOLOGY 12 WORKSHEET CHAPTER 22 1

The liver processes the blood that leaves the
stomach and intestine and breaks down balances,
create the nutrients, and also metabolizes drugs
into forms that are easier to use for the rest of the
body or that are nontoxic.

The large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes,

produces and absorbs vitamins, and forms and
propels feces toward the rectum for elimination.

The stomach is an organ that digests food. It

produces enzymes and acids. This mix of enzymes
and digestive juices breaks down food so it can pass
to your small intestine.

The small intestine absorbs nutrients and water

from your food.

The mouth allows air and nutrients to enter your

body. Also, this is where mechanical and chemical
digestion first occurs.

The esophagus is a hollow, muscular tube that

carries food and liquid from your throat to your
stomach. Muscles in your esophagus propel food
down to your stomach.
