CRITICAL ESSAY

The "Two Brothers' Story"

The Papyrus D'Orbiney in the British Museum preserves the "Tale of Two
Brothers" from ancient Egypt. The main focus of the story is on the connection
between two brothers, Anpu (Anubis) and Bata (Bata). They have a brotherly
relationship, according to the myth, and the elder shows his loving ability by
helping Bata as the younger brother. Despite the fact that Anpu is married,
both Anpu and Bata frequently collaborated in their farming efforts. Thus, the
novel introduces the reader to Anpu's, his wife's and Bata's relationship in
which Anpu's wife tries unsuccessfully to seduce Bata by making sexual
advances. The author uses the two brothers and the wife to create a vivid
reflection between different genders and sexes in both ancient and modern
Egypt. The novel takes place in ancient Egypt amid an agricultural blunder,
which the author utilizes to deepen Anpu and Bata's sibling bond. Despite the
two brothers' deep bond, which is exemplified by feelings of love and
companionship, the wife manages to keep the two brothers apart owing to her
lusty feelings. As a result of the tension between the two brothers, as well as
their growing distrust of one another, they forego the wonderful moments of
working together and supporting one another as brothers.Anpu, on the other
hand, subsequently finds the wife's immoral schemes, murders her, and
wants to rekindle his friendship with his brother. Because they didn't seem to
have injured each other, Bata returns later in a different form and repairs their
sibling bond. This obvious message to Egyptians about the value of filial
bonds comes when he decides to give him the throne.

THE VOTERS
The theme of corruption, loyalty, guilt, authority, greed, and tradition is
explored in Chinua Achebe's The Voter. The story is narrated in the third
person by an unnamed narrator and is taken from Achebe's Girls at War and
Other Stories collection. After reading the story, the reader realizes that
Achebe may be exploring the theme of corruption. Marcus has ensured that
his life has improved in comparison to people who live in Umuofia as a
politician. His constituents do not have the same access to water as Marcus,
despite the fact that he has built himself a new home with running water in the
basement.Although it is not stated clearly that Marcus has obtained his
property in an improper manner, the fact that he has ready and simple access
to vast sums of money suggests that he may be dishonest. In addition, in
order to ensure that some of the local elders vote for Marcus, Roof on Marcus
bribes them. Roof never explains to the elders why they should vote for
Marcus or what the community will gain from his election at any point in the
novel. In truth, Roof is bribing the village elders to ensure that they vote for
Marcus regardless of what Marcus may or may not do for them.Marcus, not
the elders or others in the community, is Roof's primary concern. The elders
also don't seem to be thinking about what the ramifications of their actions
(voting for Marcus) would be. The local elders, like Marcus and Roof, are
corrupt, and they are more interested with getting paid for their votes than
they are with improving the village's quality of life. It's also possible that
Achebe is looking into the concept of loyalty. Roof accepts a bribe in
exchange for his devotion to Marcus, but he also accepts a bribe to ensure
that he votes for Maduka.Roof shows Marcus no loyalty at the end of the
story, despite the fact that he spends the entire story attempting to ensure
Marcus' re-election. In order to vote for Maduka, he has been persuaded by
the five pounds he has been given. In many respects, this is paradoxical since
while though Roof is working for Marcus, Marcus does not trust him. It's also
possible that Achebe is bringing attention to the way elections in Nigeria were
conducted at the time the novel was published. With the prospect of
widespread corruption. A politician was able to ensure that they were elected
by bribing the village elders.Roof, like Marcus, may lose any comforts he has
gained as a result of his depravity. If Marcus loses the election, there will be
no need for the elders to listen to Roof since there will be no money to bribe
the elders with. The iyi's entrance may also be significant since it appears that
Achebe is investigating the issue of tradition by including it in the story. iyi,
and his actions at the polling station may be triggered by his fear of the iyi and
what might happen if he does not vote for Maduka, if he does not keep his
promise to vote for Maduka. The story's conclusion is equally intriguing, if not
ironic. Roof believes he has kept his promise to vote for Maduka by cutting his
ballot paper in half and placing half of it in each ballot box. Roof, on the other
hand, has spoiled his ballot by not voting for either Marcus or Maduka. Roof
hasn't been able to vote for either man despite being tempted by one of
Maduka's men and having a strong sense of allegiance to Marcus. Achebe
describes Roof as 'jauntily' coming out of the polling station, which he appears
to be oblivious to.'It's also possible that Achebe is stating that people should
be able to vote freely without being influenced by others (Elders, Roof,
Marcus and Maduka). With Roof functioning as an agent of corruption in order
for Marcus to continue living the lifestyle he has been accustomed to, this is
not the case throughout the novel. At the same time, he does nothing to help
his citizens. Because of the corruption that prevails in Umuofia, democracy
has not been permitted to play its function. Because of Marcus' and Maduka's
actions, the reader is also aware that the next election will be tainted as
well.Maduka may not have won the election this time, but he is preparing for
the next one. In Umuofia, like Marcus, paying for votes with money and
having no concern for the residents.
