Common App Essay

Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a
new understanding of yourself or others.

Have you ever been a part of a group so supportive and caring? Well, for me, the

marching band was this phenomenon. The marching band is such a great sport/ athletic

because everyone in the group is so connected and cares for each other so much. This

group has changed my life around drastically from being the quieter kid who wanted to

do marine biology to a kid who wants to become a music teacher. Furthermore, it is a

group that helps you get through high school and it also helps you gain a family and a

lifelong series of bonds with most of these people. Yes, marching band is an interesting

topic because there is so much to talk about such as going to football games and what to

expect, going to competitions, parades, learning a new show every single year, having the

ability to march and play at the same time, and so much more. My school was a school

that did competition shows and I was in the Pit for three out of the four years and lets just

say I realize now that the pieces are so much harder to play and learn because of the

difficulty that is in the pieces.

The person or people that I would go to, to learn more about this topic is, my instructor Mr.
Wilkins, Mr. Ruth, Mr. Heidelbaugh, or my percussion instructor Ms. Hill. The reason I would

go to these people is because I have a really good connection with these people and I feel like
they would help me a lot. They all know that I want to become a music teacher and they have all
been really supportive of it and really excited about it. They have also taught me everything that
I already know about marching band.

The reason that this athletic feat captivated me was because of the complexity behind it. There is
so much to learn and do within it you would never be able to understand it. One of my personal
favorite things that drew my attention to it was when I was like 13 my parents brought me to the
school for a football game and I saw the band perform and I instantly went, "I want to do that"
and from that day on I waited until I go that sheet of paper asking me to be signed up for the
marching band.

Also another reason that it captivated me is because I have gained a tremendous interest in music
and teaching in general and it made me think of what I want to become and what I want to do. I
want to become a marching band director as well. Music has caught my eye because of how
much there is to learn about it and also the look at how many instruments you can also learn
about.

In conclusion, the Marching band has a grand look on it and how it is used and seen. You can
literally go online and find hours upon hours of music and still not know everything about it.
There's a lot to learn about it and I can't wait to get to know it better. Overall, Yes, marching
band is a topic I can go on and on for.
