Pakistan signed a new agreement with China
to begin the second phase of the USD 60
billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor
(CPEC). Pakistan and China decided to
welcome any third country joining the multi-
billion dollar China- Pakistan Economic
Corridor (CPEC).
China gave nod to Pakistan's decision to
scrap the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor
(CPEC) Authority amid reportsof growing
rift between the all-weather friends over the
slow pace of the USD 60 billion project.
About CPEC
 CPEC is a 3,000 km network of
infrastructure projects linking the
Gwadar Port in Pakistan's western region
of Balochistan with the Xinjiang Uygur
Autonomous Region in northwest China.
 It is a bilateral initiative between
Pakistan and China that aims to improve
connectivity throughout Pakistan by
building a network of roads, railroads,
and pipelines along with other
infrastructure development initiatives in
the energy, industrial, and other sectors.
 China will be able to access the Indian
Ocean through Gwadar Port, opening up
access to the Middle East and Africa. In
exchange, China will finance Pakistani
development projects to help Pakistan
overcome its energy crisis and stabilise
its ailing economy.

Founded in 2013, it is a multibillion dollar
effort. With a network of land and water
routes, it seeks to connect Southeast Asia,
Central Asia, the Gulf area, Africa, and
Europe.
It has been established to carry out
significant global infrastructure projects,
which will subsequently increase China's
influence abroad.
About CPEC Authority
A 2019 ordinance formed the China-Pakistan
Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority.
 Its objectives included quickening the
speed of CPEC-related initiatives,
identifying fresh sources of growth, and
releasing the potential of global value
chains and interconnected production
networks through regional and
international connections.
Reasons for Suspension:
 Local protests against the Pakistan Army
over land issues have been on the rise in
Gilgit Baltistan, which is occupied by
Pakistan.
 The army's "land grabbing" rampage in
the name of CPEC has incensed the local
populace.
 The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA),
which opposed Chinese investments in
Balochistan, carried out a suicide attack
in Karachi University in April 2022 that
resulted in the deaths of three Chinese.

the Communist nation's control of
Gwadar port solidifies its total
dominance of the Indian Ocean.
Chinese leadership in trade and a stronger
BRI:
 China's BRI initiative, which aims to
increase trade connections between
China and the rest of Eurasia through a
system of ports, roads, and trains, has
frequently been seen as part of China's
political dominance strategy in the
region.
INDO-CHINA DISENGAGEMENT AT HOT
SPRINGS & GOGRA POST
News
In the Gogra-Hotspring district of Eastern
Ladakh, the Indian and Chinese soldiers
have just started disengaging at Patrolling
Pillar 15 (PP-15).
Since April 2020, the two nations' militaries
have been locked in a hostile stance in the
region. The action is being taken in advance
of the SCO summit in Uzbekistan.

Key Highlights about the Current
Disengagement
A step toward ending the standoff that has
been going on since May 2020 has been
made with the beginning of the Indian and
Chinese soldiers' withdrawal from Patrolling
Point-15 in the Gogra-Hotsprings region of
Eastern Ladakh.
One of the 65 patrolling sites along the Line
of Actual Control in Ladakh is PP-15 (LAC).
The withdrawal has started in a planned and
coordinated manner, which promotes calm
and tranquillity in the border regions.
According to the earlier agreement on
disengagement, a buffer zone is to be
established at the flashpoints after both sides
have withdrew their soldiers, and new
patrolling guidelines are to be established
after total disengagement and de-escalation.
 The 16th session of the India China Corps
Commander Level Meeting resulted in
agreement on the disengagement.
 On July 17, 2022, at the Chushul border
staff meeting location on the Indian side,
the 16th round of negotiations took
place.
 The two parties have held 16 rounds of
negotiations since the standoff started in
May 2020, during which both sides of
Pangong Tso have taken steps toward
withdrawal.
 Forces from the two nations have now
disengaged at all flashpoints in the area,
including PP-14, PP-15, and PP-17A. These
flashpoints included the North and
South banks of the Pangong Tso.

 Following the 12th Corp Commander

Level meeting, the two countries' soldiers
last disengaged at PP-17 A in August 2021.
 Demchok and Depsang remain the key
issues of contention, which China has
steadfastly refused to recognize because,
in its view, they are not involved in the
current standoff.

About Hot Springs and Gogra Post

Location:

Hot Springs is located immediately north of

the Chang Chenmo River, and Gogra Post is
located to the east of where the river makes a
sharp left to the southwest after travelling
southeast from Galwan Valley.

The region is south-east of Galwan Valley

and north of the Karakoram Range of
mountains, which is north of Pangong Tso
Lake.
