MANAGEMENT ASSIGNMENT: MANAGING BY

WHOS OBJECTIVES

ANS 1 It appears that Ben is attempting to implement a management by objectives (MBO) system at
Rice Printing Company. MBO is a goal-oriented approach to management that involves setting
specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals for an organization and its
employees. It is a workable system if implemented correctly and can be effective in improving
employee productivity and making evaluations easier.

ANS 2 There are a few things that Ben could do differently to improve the implementation of an
MBO system at Rice Printing Company. First, he could involve all employees in the goal-setting
process, not just the senior management team. This can help to ensure that the goals are aligned
with the needs and capabilities of the entire organization and can foster a sense of ownership and
commitment to achieving the goals. Ben could also consider using a more collaborative and
participatory approach to goal-setting, rather than simply issuing written copies of the goals to the
management team and expecting them to come up with operational plans and strategies on their
own.

ANS 3

If I were Ben, I would consider setting the following types of goals for the company:

Financial goals: These could include targets for revenue, profit, cost savings, and cash flow.

Customer service goals: These could focus on improving customer satisfaction and loyalty, such as by
reducing turnaround times or increasing the percentage of orders completed on time and within
budget.

Quality goals: These could include targets for reducing defects or improving the overall quality of the
products or services offered by the company.

Innovation goals: These could focus on encouraging the development of new ideas and approaches,
such as through the implementation of a continuous improvement program or the creation of a
dedicated innovation team.

Employee engagement goals: These could aim to improve morale, retention, and overall job
satisfaction among employees, such as through the implementation of employee recognition
programs or training and development opportunities.
