Abstract

The present study was primarily done to explore the psychosocial determinants of life

meaningfulness among the recovering substance users. The main objective of the study was to

address the questions whether perceived social support and spiritual wellbeing can predict the

meaningfulness in life among recovering substance users. Sample consisted of 232 substance

users approached at three hospitals (nishtar hospital, nai zindagi hospital, and nijaat hospital)

of Multan. A booklet comprising four scales; meaning in life scale, perceived social support

scale, spiritual well-being scale, and depression, anxiety, stress scale was administered to the

participants. The correlation analyses showed that life meaningfulness was positively

correlated with perceived social support and spiritual well-being while was negatively

correlated with depression, anxiety, and stress. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that

life meaningfulness was regressed upon perceived social support and spiritual well-being.

However social support from family and religious well-being explained more life

meaningfulness than social support from friends and existential well-being respectively.

Results further indicated that depression, anxiety, and stress had nothing to predict life

meaningfulness among recovering substance users.
