Rahu-Saturn and Saturn-Rahu Periods

By Marc Boney M.A.

Copyright: All Rights Reserved 2016

Dedicated to Shri K.N. Rao

Who ignited in me the light of Jyotisa

"Jyotisa is the art of seeing light, of guiding, of counseling based on the truth called the

horoscope. Jyotisa is the pathway to God through the mazes of intuitions and the bril-

liance of an organized science, like any other science. Jyotisa is the fusion of the divine

with the mundane, the metaphysical with the scientific methodology, a divine chorus

of the music of the heavens and the dance of the stars. It is that divine ballet, Jyotisa,

which is at once both a divinity and science that we are presenting."

Introduction

After K.N. Rao stopped conning to the USA around 1996 a large part of how I continued to learn from
him was through his voluminous writing. I read his books and articles over and over again, particularly
his case studies of predictions that had proved correct, trying to understand his astrological logic, his
methodology and how he had come to accurate conclusions. Any new book of his that appeared I would
immediately purchase and study thoroughly, let it sit for a period of time, and then study it again. When
questions would arise, I would "batch" these then query him via e-mail, careful not to abuse the privilege.
More often than not he was gracious enough to respond, for which I will be forever grateful.

In 1999 he published a small volume entitled "Enigmas in Astrology," a collection of essays on a smor-
gasbord of topics including Rahu-Saturn and Saturn-Rahu periods which can oftentimes give, as his title
suggests, enigmatic results. He begins this topic with an amusing story:

"Once, when an astrologer was casting a horoscope there was some interruption and he had to leave his
seat for some minutes. After returning, he apologized to his client and continued doing the work. Absent-
mindedly he put two Rahus in the horoscope. The surprised client who knew some rudiments of astrology
asked the astrologer how could he have two Rahus and two Ketus in his horoscope? The immodest as-
trologer (not wanting to admit his mistake) said that it was a "family secret" which he alone knew."

Shri Rao goes on to observe:

"In the majority of horoscopes in the Saturn-Rahu or Rahu-Saturn periods, two Rahus or two Saturns
seem to function fully with "no-holds-barred" ferocity. It appears strange that Rahu who has the moola-
trikona ownership of Aquarius in Jaimini astrology, which is the mooltrikona sign of Saturn, should be so.
Yet, it is so, though as happens in astrology, there are exceptions to the rule."

My own reaction upon reading this observation was an immediate "How truel" since my own Rahu-Saturn
period from ages 29 to 32 had been among the unhappiest of my life.

Parasara Hora tells us that planets will give their results in their periods and sub-periods, at least in part,
according to their natural significations. Rahu and Saturn are two dire malefics and so as a period-sub-
period combination, this fact alone can signal a difficult time. Of course, it is not always so and like any
period and sub-period, so much depends on the specific disposition of these grahas in a birth chart. How-
ever, it was this essay of Shri Rao's that first got me paying special attention to Rahu-Saturn and Saturn-
Rahu periods.

Strangely enough, I started observing that they are periods and sub-periods like that of Rahu-Venus and
Venus-Rahu that can bring marriage, though to a lesser degree. It was, for example, true for Bill Clinton
when he married Hillary though neither of these grahas are all that connected to the 7th house/7th lord of
h\s rasi or navamsa. When the Clintons married on October 11, 1975, Bill was running Rahu-Saturn.

Examine the position and lordship of these planets both in the birth chart and the D-9 and you will see that
marriage in this period and sub-period is not at all obvious. What the period was like for him otherwise is
difficult to ascertain, but it did coincide with his first taste of political defeat, an unsuccessful bid for a seat
in the Arkansas House of Representatives.

Another famous politician, Indira Gandhi, also married in her Rahu-Saturn period, though it is easier to see
why.

If you read about the circumstances of her life at that time, one can only image how difficult and stressful
it must have been. Her mother had died of tuberculosis in Indira's Mars-Sun period when she was eigh-
teen. Using Libra, the 4th house of mother as a lagna, both Mars and the Sun become primary marakas.
Mars rules the 2nd house from Libra and the Sun is placed in the 2nd.

Shortly thereafter she moved into her Rahu period in the 6th house of illness, she also came down with the
disease and was in and out of sanitariums in Switzerland for treatment. See that Rahu is in the naksatra of
Ketu in the 12th house.

Prior to this, while studying at the University of Oxford, she had started a relationship with Feronze
Gandhi, a Zorastrian Parsi from Gujarat, something that made him a very unsuitable match since she was
Hindu.

So in the early part of the Rahu period her personal situation was that her mother had died, her father was
in an out of the British jail for his political agitating, the family home had been turned over to a despised
aunt who when she was a child had repeatedly referred to her as "ugly and stupid" and she was battling
tuberculosis.

Feronze, who would visit her in Switzerland, became her only refuge and she clung to him and they
agreed to defy their families and marry. In this day and age such a decision might not seem like much,
but back then, especially given the family she was from, it caused a major uproar and at first her father
refused to bless the marriage. He sought to dissuade her by getting her to agree to wait until he was
released from jail, which he thought would be years but when he was unexpectedly released early, he had
to concede. Even then, if the biographies I've read are accurate, the family came under a lot of public crit-
icism over the marriage. Though Rahu-Saturn brought the desired marriage it had to have been a rather
hellish time nonetheless.

The Saturn-Rahu period of pop music star Kate Perry brought her both the happiness of marriage and the
agony of divorce.

Saturn aspects her 7th house, Rahu gives the results oikaraka Venus, as in the case of Indira Gandhi, but
is again in a 6-8 relationship with Saturn.

She married Russell Brand on October 23, 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan, but just
14 months later on December 30, 2011 he announced that they were divorcing. It was her Saturn-Rahu-
Mars period, with the pratyantar dasa lord conjunct the 6th lord, and in a 6-8 relationship with the antar-
dasa lord. It was later revealed that Brand had sent her a text announcing his intention to divorce and then
never spoke to her again. She was devastated. From Wikipedia:

11
She was initially distraught over their divorce, and said that she contemplated suicide .11

As an exalted yogakaraka planet in the lagna forming superior raja and dhana yogas with the Sun, Moon
and Mercury, Saturn brought her stupendous success, fame and fortune. But then in the sub-period of
Rahu falling in the 8th from Saturn she contemplates ending her life over a failed marriage. This is the kind
of thing that Shri Rao was referring to when including this period and sub-period in a book entitled "Enig-
mas in Astrology."

For another pop music star, Tina Turner, the period and sub-period of these two malefic grahas gave a
relationship that proved to be both a blessing and a curse.

Rahu—Saturn marked the beginning of her performing/singing career as well as her musical partnership
and personal relationship with Ike Turner, who she later married. See how Saturn falls in the 7th house
from Rahu {dasa lagna). But she later revealed in an autobiography that it was an abusive relationship in
which he frequently hit her and one in which she lived in fear. Note that her Saturn, which is also the 7th
lord from the birth lagna, is in an exchange with violent Mars from the 8th house.

This is not to imply that anytime a person marries in Rahu-Saturn or Saturn-Rahu it will also bring these
types of experiences, but rather merely to highlight that independent of other factors, this period and sub-
period can bring marriage in my experience and be a very difficult, stressful time. Now see three more
non-celebrity examples.

The following chart is that of an Indian man who married in his early thirties in his Saturn-Rahu period.
Saturn becomes quite eligible to bring this event since it is with the 7th lord Jupiter and aspecting the 7th
house. It also shows the delayed marriage. Rahu is eligible here only as an unqualified marriage-giver.

Discussion

In each of these three charts, as well as those of the well known public figures, it can be seen that one
of either Saturn or Rahu showed some eligibility to bring marriage but usually not the other. As a period
and sub-period together, I suspect few astrologers would have recognized them as ones that would bring
a marriage. My point about this is that like Rahu-Venus and Venus-Rahu, I have come to regard these
periods as potential "unqualified marriage-givers," but only when other dasas and transiting conditions
support this conclusion. The following is an example of a prediction I made on this basis.

When this Indian man consulted me in early 2014 he was already 35 and had never had any kind of
romantic relationship with a woman. At that time he was living in Nepal and running his Saturn-Moon
period. I saw that Saturn-Rahu was coming up beginning in January 2016 and that it coincided with his
moving into his Sagittarius period in Jaimini's Chara dasa in December 2015. Sagittarius is his 7th house
and contains his darakaraka Mars, the indicator of spouse. This time frame further coincided with his
moving into his Mars period in Yogini dasa, another planetary dasa.

In the first part of 2016 Jupiter would be transiting Leo and aspecting his 7th house. From a retrograde
position in Scorpio, Saturn would aspect as if from Libra onto his 7th lord Jupiter and 7th house. On this
basis I predicted marriage in the spring of 2016 and it proved correct. However, without revealing details,
this Saturn-Rahu period has also proved very stressful, challenging and difficult for him in other ways.

Interpretation from Parasara Hora

When interpreting any period and sub-period it is always good to consult Parasara Hora. See the follow-
ing verses about Rahu-Saturn:

"Effects like pleasure of the king for devotion in service, auspicious functions like celebration of marriage
etc., at home, construction of a garden, reservoir etc., gain of wealth and cattle from well to do persons
belonging to Sudra class, loss of wealth caused by the king (government officials) during journey to the
West, reduction of income due to lethargy, return to homeland, will be derived in the antardasa of Saturn in
the dasa of Rahu if Saturn be in an angle or trine in his sign of exaltation, in own sign, in his moolatrikona,
the 3rd or the llth."

"Danger from menials, king and enemies, distress to wife and children, distress to kinsmen, disputes with
co-heirs, disputes in dealing with others, but sudden gain of ornaments, will result if Saturn be in his sign
of debilitation, enemy's sign or be in the 8th or 12th from the Ascendant."

"There will be heart disease, defamation, quarrels, danger from enemies, foreign journeys, skin affliction,
unpalatable food and sorrow etc., if Saturn be in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th from the lord of the dasa
(Rahu). Premature death is likely if Saturn be the lord of the 2nd and the 7th. Remedial measure to obtain
relief from the above evil effects and to regain good health is giving a black cow or she-buffalo in charity."

Verses about Saturn-Rahu:

"Effects like quarrels, mental agony, physical distress, agony, antagonism with the sons, danger from
diseases, unnecessary expenditure, discord with close relations, danger from the government, foreign
journeys, loss of house, and agricultural lands, will be derived in the antardasa of Rahu in the dasa of Sat-
urn if Rahu not be in exaltation or any other auspicious position."

"Enjoyment, gains of wealth, increase in agricultural production, devotion to deities and Brahmins,
pilgrimage to holy places, increase in cattle wealth, well being to the family will be the results at the com-
mencement of the antardasa if Rahu be associated with the lord of the Ascendant or a yogakaraka planet,
be in its sign of exaltation or in his own sign or be in an angle or the 11th from the Ascendant or the lord
the dasa (Saturn). There will be cordiality with the king and happiness from friends in the middle portion of
the antardasa.

"There will be acquisition of elephants, opulence and glory, cordial relationships with the king (govern-
ment), gains of valuable clothes, if Rahu be in Aries, Virgo, Cancer, Taurus, Pisces, or Sagittarius."

"There will be physical distress if Rahu be associated with the lord of the 2nd or the 7th. The remedial
measures to obtain relief from the above evil effects: Mrityunjaya japa and giving a goat in charity.

Commentary

Of course, these statements should not be applied literally but from them we can extract the following
useful interpretive guidelines:

• In either Rahu-Saturn or Saturn-Rahu, if the sub-period lord has a good dignity or is in other
auspicious conditions and/or falls in an angle or trine house from the birth lagna or dasa
lagna, good results can be expected. The 3rd and 11th house placements have been men-
tioned as well. More about this later. The more these conditions apply the better.

• In either Rahu-Saturn or Saturn-Rahu, if the sub-period lord has a bad dignity or is in some
other bad condition and/or is poorly placed from the birth lagna or dasa lagna, unfavorable
results can be expected. The more these conditions apply, the worse the period.

• If, as a sub-period lord, Saturn rules the 2nd or 7th it becomes a maraka and can cause
physical distress or even death when a person's longevity has expired. Rahu as a sub-pe-
riod lord can act similarly if associated with the 2nd and 7th lords.

• Rahu can give better results in Aries, Virgo, Cancer, Taurus, Pisces or Sagittarius. Note that
five out of six of these signs are those of natural benefics.

• Charity and mantra japa are given throughout Parasara Hora as the most effective remedial
measures. Shri Rao always emphasized that charity is helping any needy person in any way,
not just giving money.
The point about good sign placements of Rahu brings up the question of the exaltation, moolatrikona and
own sign of Rahu and Ketu. I follow my Jyotisa-guru's example and go by what is given in Parasara Hora,
though other texts differ. See these verses:

"In order to clarify the effects of the dasa of Rahu, I shall first mention the signs of exaltation and debilita-
tion of Rahu and Ketu. The sign of exaltation of Rahu is Taurus. The sign of exaltation of Ketu is Scorpio.
The moolatrikona of Rahu and Ketu are Gemini and Sagittarius respectively. The own sign of Rahu and
Ketu are Aquarius and Scorpio in that order. Some have expressed the view that Virgo is the own sign of
Rahu and Pisces is the own sign of Ketu."

Very Bad Results

Earlier we looked at what transpired in Indira Gandhi's Rahu-Saturn period. Later in her life, Saturn-Rahu
proved fatal when she was assassinated during this period.

Very Good Results

Yet as the above quoted verses indicate, a highly favorable mutual disposition between these two grahas,
along with other favorable conditions can produce very good and desirable results. Boxer George Fore-
man became the heavyweight champion of the world in 1973 in his Rahu-Saturn period.

Note first that his Rahu is in the sign of Aries, one of the placements given in Parasara Hora as being
auspicious. Being in Aries, Rahu is also giving the results of its dispositor, an exalted yogakaraka Mars, in
the 6th house of "the fight."

Saturn as a sub-period lord gives raja yoga as the 7th lord in the 1st house from the birth lagna and as the
10th lord in the 5th from the dasa lagna. Rahu and Saturn fall in a trine and an angle house respectively
from the birth lagna, are in a highly favorable 5-9 relationship from each other and both additionally re-
ceive the aspect of a strong swakshetra Jupiter.

From this perspective the combination of Mars, Saturn and Jupiter form multiple raja and dhana yogas
with both Jupiter and Saturn vargottama. He first started playing hockey professionally at age 17 in Rahu-
Jupiter and then became the MVP in Rahu-Saturn.

Again, the dasamsa adds an important additional perspective as to why these periods proved so favor-
able in his career life.

In 1963, at age 45, she quit her corporate job in disgust after repeatedly being passed over for promotion
in favor of men that she had trained. With a $5000 loan from her oldest son, she started her business. It
was her Saturn-Venus period. Five years later she took the company public and became a multi-million-
aire in Saturn-Rahu.

Saturn as the 4th lord in the 9th house gives raja yoga, and as the 9th lord in the 2nd from the Moon
gives dhana yoga. Rahu, though in its debilitation sign, gives the results of the lagna lord Mars in the
10th in an exchange with an exalted 10th lord, Sun. We see Saturn and Rahu again in a good 5-9 mutual
disposition.

Saturn and Rahu in a 1-7 relationship and in good conditions made Shirley Temple a major movie star
though she was only five years old when she entered her Rahu-Saturn period. In 1934, at age six, she ap-
peared in seven movies and was given a special Academy Award.

Her Rahu is exalted in Taurus and in the 7th house from the lagna. According to classical principles it
will give the results of its dispositor Venus and any associated planets. Note that the dispositor Venus is
approaching its highest point of exaltation at 23 Pisces and is with Jupiter in its own sign. This conjunc-
tion of the two best natural benefics, beautifully placed in her 5th house, is also a superior raja yoga from
both the birth lagna and the Moon. Jupiter is also involved in Gajakesari Yoga. It was in the Rahu-Jupiter
period that she was "discovered" at a dancing school at age 3 and began appearing in a series of short
films. Notice that Jupiter falls in the 11th house from the dasa lord Rahu, one of the relationships given as
favorable by Parasara.

This was followed by Rahu-Saturn in late 1933 and her incredible rise to stardom began. Note that Saturn
is the planet most closely connected with the Rahu-Ketu axis, and is the 3rd lord of the dramatics arts from
the birth lagna. It too is involved in raja yoga since it is also the 4th lord in an exchange with the lagna lord
Mars.

But now see that from the dasa lagna Taurus, Saturn is the best yogakaraka since it rules both the 9th
and 10th house and is amplified by the Rahu-Ketu axis. It is also in kendra relationship with the dasa lord
Rahu. The icing on the cake is their relationship in
D-10 where Rahu is in its moolatrikona sign with the benefic Venus and Saturn is in the 10th house from
Rahu.

From these five examples the reader can now appreciate what K.N. Rao meant when he referred to
"exceptions" regarding the more typical challenges and even miseries that Rahu-Saturn or Saturn-Rahu
can bring. They illustrate also what the verses from Parasara Hora emphasize, which is that it all depends
on the over-disposition of Rahu and Saturn in any particular chart. In four of these cases Rahu and Saturn
were in trine relationships and in Shirley Temple's chart they were angular from each other, along with
many other favorable factors. I have no idea what these periods were like for these people otherwise, but
they were outstanding from a professional achievements standpoint. If Shirley Temple appeared in seven
movies in one year, one can only imagine that her life had to have been mostly "all work and no play,"
which, for a child of six years old, must have been rather hard.

However, I do know what Rahu-Saturn brought, both bad and good, in the life of a woman whose chart is
given below since both K.N. Rao and I had given her predictions about it.

The favorable side is that her Rahu and Saturn are in all the kinds of good conditions and placements in
which the above quoted verses from Parasara Hora say that they can then give favorable results as a pe-
riod and sub-period. Together they also form raja yoga, with Rahu acting as an angle lord and Saturn as a
vargottama 5th lord, with the additional influence of two natural benefics, one of whom is exalted and the
other getting directional strength.

K.N. Rao had told her that she would have good professional success at this time, which proved quite
correct, but that there would also be some "knocks on the head." This was his rather euphemistic way of
saying that she would suffer considerably at this time as well, which she did. Saturn here is also the 6th
lord. Even with the professional success that this period brought, she regards it in many ways as a very
difficult time in her life. Whereas I am not at liberty to reveal most details, she had an emergency health
crisis that was life threatening, among other things. Note the maraka placement of Rahu and Saturn.

Natural Malefics and Trisadaya Houses

Early on in my association with K.N. Rao I heard him say that some classics of Jyotisa praise natural
malefics falling in houses 3, 6 and 11, and that they can give good results there, especially if they collect
together, even raja yoga-like results. Then sometime later while perusing the chapter on raja yogas in
Parasara Hora I came across the following:

"If all the benefics are in angles and all the malefics are in trisadaya (3-6-11) even the base born native will
certainly be a king"
Why can the presence of natural malefics in 3, 6, and 11 be a good thing? My own speculation about this
relates to a passage in the Bhagavad-Gita in which Krishna tells Arjuna that the "three gates of hell are
moha, (excessive desire), krodha (anger) and lobha (greed)," because these keep the soul in darkness and
bound to the cycle of birth, death and re-birth. These three impulses are indicated by the 3rd, 6th and
11th houses respectively, and it appears that natural malefics there help control these impulses. It may be
like the principle in mathematics that two negatives make a positive.

I have also heard Shri Rao observe that to achieve anything in the modern, highly competitive world these
placements of the natural malefics are useful. The 3rd house represents one's capacity for courageous
action and intense effort while the 6th house represents the capacity to fight and to struggle against ob-
stacles and competitors. Natural malefics there appear to give the capacity for sustained, concentrated
effort, the ability to struggle against and overcome obstacles, triumph over enemies/competitors and the
ability to assert oneself.

How this pertains to Rahu and Saturn as period and sub-period lords is that if they are together in houses
3, 6 and 11, in my experience, they can give raja-yoga like results when activated in the dasa sequence.
If these are joined by additional natural malefics like Mars or the Sun, this potential appears to become
even stronger. See the chart of mega-movie star and film director Mel Gibson.

Now note a similar collection of malefics in the 3rd house of another movie star, Liza Minnelli.

While mostly known for her Oscar-winning performance in Cabaret in 1972, her first "break out" role was
in The Sterile Cuckoo in 1969 in Saturn-Rahu, for which she received an Oscar nomination. Saturn's abil-
ity to give her movie stardom as the 10th lord in the 3rd house of the dramatic arts could be accounted for
in more conventional ways because it forms raja yoga with the 1st lord Mars, though it appears to me that
this principle of natural malefics giving raja yoga when collecting in the trisadaya houses is also strongly
coming into play.

See also that all these malefics in her 3rd house get the aspect of a vargottama Jupiter in an exchange
with her exalted Venus. Then, apply dasa lagna (Saturn) and see how brilliant the 10th house becomes
from there.

Another famous movie star's career was also launched in her Saturn-Rahu period, with these two together
again in the 3rd house. Eva Gardner was first put under contract by MGM in 1941, but it was not until her
role in the 1946 film, The Killers, that her stardom began. It was her Saturn-Rahu period.

Saturn is in its own sign in the 9th as the yogakaraka and Rahu is exalted in the lagna.

Note:
From such examples should come the realization that all the interpretive principles outlined earlier from
Parasara Hora for interpreting periods and sub-periods can and should be applied to all divisional charts.

Eva Gardner's greater stardom came in her Mercury mahadasa. Make Mercury's position in Sagittarius
the lagna and it will become apparent why, along with Mercury's swakshetra placement in the D-10.

A performer of another kind also got initial success in his Rahu-Saturn period falling together in the 3rd
house. Illusionist David Cooperfield is the most successful stage magician in history and it all started at a
very young age in his Rahu major period.

From Wikipedia:

"Copperfield's television specials have won 21 Emmy Awards of a total 38 nominations. Best known for his
combination of storytelling and illusion, Copperfield's career of over 40 years has earned him 11 Guiness
World Records, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a knighthood by the French government, and he
has been named a Living Legend by the US Library of Congress.

Copperfield has so far sold 33 million tickets and grossed over $4 billion, which is more than any other
solo entertainer in history. In 2015, Forbes listed his earnings at $63 million for the previous 12 months and
ranked him the 20th highest earning celebrity in the world."

Jupiter is vargottama with an exalted Saturn, while the sub-period lord Rahu falls 10th from there with a
benefic. During his Saturn major period he became a highly successful and renowned professor at the
Yale School of Law.

Again, without this principle of natural malefics in 3, 6 and 11 giving raja yoga, this would be difficult to
see. Certainly Saturn as the 1st lord in the 9th from Chandra lagna helps tell that story partially, as well as
Saturn's exaltation in the D-10.

Rahu and Saturn At Their Worst

According to the U.S. judiciary systems, the worst possible crime is the willful, premeditated murder of
another human being. The chart below belongs to a man who in the summer of 1976 in his Rahu-Saturn
period murdered six people and wounded seven others in an attempt to kill them. He was apprehended
finally and now serves a life sentence in prison for his crimes.

Looking at his Rahu and Saturn, it may be surprising for the reader to see that they are in a mutual 5-9
relationship, highlighted as favorable in Parasara Hora. However, I am showing this case purposefully to
make the point that no astrological judgment should be based on a single factor and that other conditions
can modify and completely negate such generally favorable factors.

The astrological key to understanding his horrific behavior in the Rahu major period, at least partially, is to
see that Rahu is giving the results of a highly malefic Mahapataka "Great Sin" Yoga. This rather obscure
combination has the following definition, which is rather surprising since it includes the influence of the
natural benefic, Jupiter.
"The Moon with Rahu aspected by Jupiter who is with a natural malefic."

Such a combination has to be interpreted very carefully to see if it does actually show the inclination to
commit heinous crimes like this man did. The following are important, relevant points about this combina-
tion in Berkowitz's chart.

• The Moon, a very important key to a person's psychological make-up, is very closely con-
junct Rahu, separated only by one degree, and both are in the sign of a malefic.

• The Moon and Rahu's dispositor, Saturn, goes to the 12th house. Saturn as the 4th and 5th
lords of his chart, also relates to his mental/emotional states, and this shows is mental/emo-
tional disturbance.

• The way this disturbed mentality turned murderous is all the connections to the 8th house
and Mars, both of which represent the killing of another living being. The 4th and 5th lord
Saturn is disposited by Mercury by sign and Mars by naksatra, who are together in a plane-
tary war in the 8th house.

• Jupiter for his lagna is the worst functional malefic, ruling the 6th house, and it is combust
and with malefic and violent Mars.

In my experience, it is only such a Mahapataka Yoga that will give effects like this.

The woman whose chart is given below had the great misfortune of being a murder victim when it was
only Rahu and Saturn being activated in the dasa sequence. She was bludgeoned to death by a man
who convinced her that her car had a problem and offered to give her a ride. She was running her
Rahu-Rahu-Saturn period, with these two grahas now as a antardasa-pratyantara combination.

Again we see a positional relationship that is spoken of favorably by Parasara Hora, since Saturn falls
in the 3rd house from Rahu. But if you assess these two grahas more thoroughly, the danger be-
comes readily apparent.

• Rahu contributes to the arista yoga formed by the lagna lord Mercury in the 12th house
under the influence of the Rahu-Ketu axis. The addition of a very dark 11th lord Moon is
not helpful here.

• Rahu in the 6th house receives the aspect of a debilitated 8th lord Mars and also gives
the results of its dispositor, Saturn, debilitated in the 8th house. Recall that it is Mars
and the 8th house that indicates the killing of a living being.

• At the time of her murder Rahu was transiting through her 1st house and Saturn as-
pected the 1st house from its transit in Pisces.

These last two examples illustrate the need to assess all the conditions and indications of Rahu and Sat-
urn when they become active together in the dasa sequence, not just their positional relationship.

Iron And Steel

At the beginning of this article I mentioned that my Rahu-Saturn period was a rather unhappy period in my
life, which is why Shri Rao's observations about the vicissitudes that these periods can bring resonated
with me. You will see that Saturn falls 8th from Rahu in my chart.

The aspect of a strong Jupiter on Saturn is a "saving grace" and prevented things from getting too bad.
But I recall that I was in a job that I hated, and felt at the time that my career and life in general were going
nowhere. It did bring a relationship, but one that I should not have been in, and I tore cartilage in a knee
that needed surgery in this period. I can remember being rather depressed these entire three years for the
most part.

Suffering is often a spur to action, and with Saturn as the 5th lord I did make the decision to go to
graduate school in Counseling Psychology and started taking coursework in the evening to qualify for ad-
mittance. This set me on a career direction that has been much better and more suitable to my soul.

As a child growing up in the 1950's I can remember a very popular, catchy tune entitled Sixteen Tons by
the recording artist Tennessee Ernie Ford. The lyrics, rather dark and depressing, told the story of a mis-
erable coal miner who lamented his existence in the refrain:

"I load sixteen tons and what I get?

Another day older and a little deeper in debt.
St. Peter don't you call me because I can't go,
I owe my soul to the company store."

The last verse describes how his embittered existence has made him an angry, violent and dangerous
man.

If you see me coming, better step aside.

A lot of men didn't and a lot of men died.
One fist of iron, the other of steel,
If the right one don't getcha, then the left one will.

For God knows what reason, when thinking about Rahu and Saturn together as a dasa-antardasa se-
quence, this verse came to mind. Certainly, they can be a potent, one-two punch that knocks you around
with one fist of iron (Rahu) and the other of steel (Saturn).

Now in my Saturn major period, Saturn-Rahu looms ahead. What will it bring? I once heard Shri Rao
observe that people seek astrological consultation out of "the haunting fear of the past, the anxiety of the
present, and the hope for the future." I will be in my early ZO's, where it is not uncommon for one's health
to begin to fail. Behind it is Saturn-Jupiter, a maraka combination. A Brighu reader told me in 1996 that
my longevity would be no less than 72 years. Was it a polite way of saying it would be the time of my
passing?

I'll not dwell on it, but try to use wisely what time is left for me in this incarnation, whatever that may be.
I will chant the Hanuman Chalisa, do my sadhana and prepare myself for Saturn-Rahu, and any blows it
may bring of its..../ran And Steel.
