    A telescope is an instrument used to see distant objects by collecting light, with "tele" meaning distant or far. The planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can be seen without a telescope. The eight planets of the Solar System are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Day and night are caused by the Earth's rotation, with the side facing the sun experiencing day and the opposite side experiencing night.
