Green Violinist (1924):

This is a picture of a man who is green and has a beard, he is playing the violin and is standing
upon houses, on his pants are strange patterns one resembling a checkerboard and the other
buildings. Behind him is snow and more buildings, there is a person on his left that doesn’t
immediately fit in with the picture and there is what appears to be a floating person in the clouds
above the buildings.

This painting initially strikes me as similar to Fiddler On The Roof and features similar decisions
like in having someone play a stringed instrument like a violin or fiddle and resembling the color
green, the proportion is also similar in how in doesn’t make any sense how the fiddler is so huge
compared to everything else and how parts of the painting don’t make sense. I find the floating
person to possibly be an angel or god, standing above the houses in such proportion resembles a
sense of authority over something lower, the emotions of the green violinist aren’t really happy
or sad, he is focussed in his playing and what he is doing. Possible IO texts that this may align
with are Robert Frost and talking about creativity as a whole and the power a medium has on
conveying a message.
The Promenade (1918):

This painting is relatively simple there is a background of grass and housing with a church of
some sort in the middle the church is pink while the housing is green, there is a pile red feathered
birds in the bottom right corner and there is a couple of people one man in black and a woman
who is floating in the sky and wearing a more magenta like color, the sky is filled with clouds.

The appearance of the ground seems unusual as it is cut up and placed at different levels with
little continuity between them, Chagall chose to make the houses green and the church pink, the
church is pink likely to symbolize its uniqueness and importance, the houses may be green
inorder to draw attention to other parts of the painting like the figures and color choice, the
women floating could be her passing on to the next life or relying on the man for support to stay
close to the ground. The sky filled clouds also serve to draw attention to the figures of the
painting as opposed to the sky. This one is harder to find a test that would pair with it but it could
be paired with A dolls house and talk about marriage and its structure within society.
The Blue Fiddler (1947):

This picture is mostly blue, with houses a chair and sky all in similar shades of blue, the figure in
the picture is wearing reddish brown pants and a green shirt there is something around his vase
that is corrugated, next to him is a wreath of flowers and above that is the moon, the actual
person is of a white complexion and is wearing gloves.

The choice to place most of the painting in blue draws attention directly to the emotion that the
fiddler is likely to be experiencing, the color blue usually represents sadness. The moon signifies
that this painting is taking place at the night where the fiddler is likely reflecting on his
experiences, the choice to have the figure sitting instead of standing serves to show that the
fiddler is taking time to reflect and rest, the fiddler is not actually colored blue like Chagall has
done with is green fiddlers and violinists. This picture can also be paired with A Doll's House to
describe the process people go through when making hard decisions as Nora had to do in A
Doll's House.
A Wheatfield on a Summer’s Afternoon (1942):

This picture features a wheat field and an orange sky. There is a small boat-like object in the
back with a person inside it appearing to be facing the field. The sun is pictured with red instead
of the usual yellow or orange one might use.

The orange sky and reddish sun serve to demonstrate the season of summer as said in the title,
the wheatfield is also directly fitting what the title says, the main focus of this picture appears to
be the wheatfield the person looking at it further points the wheatfield as important, a wheatfield
can signify a large amount of space that is seemingly endless and never changing. This painting
might be about the times we find ourselves looking out and seeing large spaces and realizing
how big this world is. Also the person can think of the labor that was once used in farming. The
text that could be paired with this for and io topic would be Robert Frost’s poems because they
reflect on the reality of life and how we as people are allowed to reflect on the absolute size of
this earth and the things that have happened.
