Takaki presents history of a number of minority groups in America and the attitudes of the

Americans towards the minorities together with government policies and legislations that affect
them. One prevalent theme in ‘A Different Mirror’ is the ethnocentrism presented by the
American authorities and ruling structure towards the minorities. An example of this is the fear
that the ‘giddy multitude’ presents towards the ‘Chinese Exclusion Act’ that was drafted during
the colonial regime in favor of the white labor. The contemporary allegations towards the
Hispanics being accused of taking a larger percentage of the American job market is an example
of an act of racism presented by Takaki.
