Name: Light Life Cycle

Statement:
Humans frequently have the false belief that we are superior to other creatures, although this is
not necessarily the case. Consider the life cycle as an example, there are several stages that all living
creatures go through, such as growing up, learning, and exceeding their personal goals. If we look at this
cycle's common factor, ‘life’, we can connect it with the words birth, growth, and death. No matter how
different we are from one another, nothing escapes the fact that life begins and inevitably ends at some
point. Our artwork will sensitively depict the various stages of plant life as a metaphor for the main
highlights in human life. This will be done with a focus on how each stage reflects growth to maturity on
their different levels by using flora to portray our message.

With the artistic finesse and incorporation of light and objects, we aimed to create an emotional
impact on the audience allowing them to understand the importance of all the represented stages
displayed in our exhibition. The audience will walk through the stages in chronological order. As will be
discussed later in detail, each important stage of life will have a different room. We considered
researching a few theories about finding a balance between light and sound to have a more fervent
exposition which allowed the spectators to create stronger connections and emotions to our piece. Due to
the light, music, and tranquil space we will be providing, the audience will be able to stay and sit down in
the rooms (they are large enough) to be able to enjoy the artwork and reflect on their lives/ interpret it as
they will.

Proposal:
In this imaginary scenario, our group will be competing to win a spot on the shortlist for the 2022
New Media Art prize. For our artwork, we wanted to "personifiy" the birth, growth, and maturity of living
beings using flora as a metaphor. The idea is to have three different-sized rooms, each of which will
represent a different state of the life cycle. The smaller room would be 5x10 meters, representing birth;
the second room would be 10x20 meters, representing growth; and the third room, 20x30 meters,
representing maturity and death. The difference of sizes for the rooms is important because it
demonstrates the different maturing stages from tiny living creatures inside a womb/ egg/ seed stage to
large, mature animals. Therefore, To demonstrate the “smallest” size a living creature is at the beginning
of life, we used the smallest room. On the contrary, to show the biggest/most mature we can be, we used
the largest room. Lastly, one important aspect that was considered when creating the room sizes was the
usage of space as a part of our artwork. The light and colors will need space to be able to reflect itself and
make an impact thus the light reflection/ where it reaches is still going to be a part of our artwork. Finally,
each room would have its own background music, going from slow-paced music in the first room to fast-
paced music in the third room.
In the first room, the first thing the viewer would experience is the lack of illumination and the
slow-paced music in the background. The audience who enters the room should not only experience the
birth of the flowers but as well of all living beings. This is because all living things have the same starting
point, either a seed, a womb, or an egg. They all start in darkness and then convert into something else.

1st Room: Called: ‘GROUND VIEW’

What we want it to look like: With some spots to represent the seeds planted in soil:

Materials to create this effect: Projector to

display the images above

Dimensions of the room where this will be displayed

into:
Explanation: (“Dirt” will be represented by a projector. A textured image will be projected like the one
seen above) This will contribute to the atmosphere of the place and will allow the viewer to feel more
connected to the piece as it has more realistic imagery.
Lightning of the First Room:

2 Green Flashing Lights on every corner ^ (Following visual representation of our idea):

(THIS LIGHT REPRESENTATION BUT IN A GREEN COLOR) The flash is only meant to last ONE
SECOND. It happens ONCE every minute. This flash represents growth and change. The rest of the lights
will be dark brown/ dark green to represent the lack of light and warmth.

The Second Room Called: ‘Waking Up

In the second room, the viewer would experience a brighter atmosphere with medium-paced
music and a medium/ sunset amount of light. This room will be the one that represents growth, youth, and
learning. This is where the audience will connect either when they were in this part of their lives (which
would be from childhood, puberty, teen, university) to where they are right now. If they are in this
moment, they would feel identified with the growth and changes. If they are past it, they will feel
nostalgic and see where they came from and reflect on their lives.

Characteristics of the room:

 Sunset light
 Warm
 Green

WILL BE HANGING FROM DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE ROOF AND WILL BE ALLOWED TO

Third Room: Called: ‘It's Alive!’

Lastly, in the third and last room, the viewers would notice that it is the one with the brighter and
more vivid atmosphere of all three. With fast-paced music and brighter illumination, the flowers are at the
peak of their maturity bloom. This should represent the stage of their life cycle, where they feel achieved,
and grown, and where they are watching other people or other living things accomplish/ pass through the
same process they did. One could say it is the best part of life because you have worked hard all your life
and received compensation for it. (In this case, the flower is blooming.) The important aspect of this
artwork is that when the audience has reached the final room representing maturity it also represents
death. This is because we want to represent death as a beautiful thing and not sad and dark. Death is
usually seen as the worst thing that can happen to a living thing. The common denominator between
almost all beliefs about death is that it is sad and horrible. Our artworks do the job of contradicting this by
not acknowledging the darkness behind the death theme. Mainly, this piece of the artwork is left up to
interpretation because depending on an individual's culture, religion, or beliefs, he/she could have
different thoughts about death but, we are trying to make those thoughts happier and more uplifting.

The Colorful dots in the following sketch represent the flowers we are willing to display: we are aiming
to have them look this way:

How this room is supposed to look:

(This is a picture one of us took in a trip to Miami, Florida at ‘Super blue Miami We used it as a reference
because it was one of our means of inspiration)

Our artwork should be available to all ages because the beautiful aspect of art is that anyone
interprets it in a different way depending on what stage of life they are in or have passed through. Even
children would enjoy this work because of the music, color, and flowers. Teenagers and young adults will
feel identified as well because they will see their growth and know that the time in their lives they are
going through (studying, working, etc.) is what they need to do to accomplish their dreams. Finally, the
last part with the flower blooming will demonstrate the beauty of having lived, accomplished goals, seen
yourself grow up, and feeling nostalgic but proud about the past.
