Art Appreciation Lecture 1

1. How is Philosophy and Art connected?

• The meanings of philosophy and art are distinct from one another, but they both
inscribe beauty and have an impact on the world. The pursuit of wisdom is known as
philosophy, and it occurs when someone begins to ponder a topic that has captured
their attention and provides an answer from their own point of view. It also has a
connection to art since whenever someone wonders what art is all about, they can
usually figure it out based on how they interpret it. Some individuals could argue that
philosophy and art are separate, yet they don't realize the power of art's ability to
convey ideas. Events are captured in art, and philosophical works unquestionably reveal
what happened in the past. Since philosophy is the art of reasoning, the art of the
illogical and the logical, and the art of critical and analytical thinking, we may confidently
assert that art is the foundation of philosophy.

2. Discuss the various purposes and functions of art in our society.

• Art has existed from the first century of human history, when humans first began to
make it. The creation of beauty is one of art's functions. Despite our flaws and
differences, art makes everything more beautiful. It can be expressed through our body
art or conventional tattooing. The second function of art is to enhance the environment
around us. It may serve as a decorator for our surroundings, lulling our eyes into a more
tranquil state. It puts us more at ease in a setting with attractive aesthetics while also
making the surroundings more pleasurable. Art's next function is to reveal truths.
Through the artwork of our ancestors, we are able to view events that took place before
we were born. It offers the world's most accurate portrayal. The last purpose of art is to
make ourselves eternal. Even if we are conscious of the finiteness of our lives here, art
has the power to keep us alive in the minds of both individuals and the general public.
There are many uses for art that we may come across in our world, but what about its
aims? Art has no boundaries; it has no bounds. Through art, we are given reasons to
hope that, one day, after the tragedy, we shall experience serenity and beauty. Light
artworks give us hope that whatever happens today will have a lovely purpose in the
end. Life also has the purpose of reducing our sense of loneliness. It might reassure us
that experiencing pain is normal. Knowing that pain is a part of our condition will cause
us to believe that it comes first, followed by a feeling that will motivate us to be happy
by outpacing the agony. The next goal of art is to restore our balance. It gives us the
ability to feel more well-rounded, secure, and sane in every situation. Yes, the universe
is beyond our control, but there is something we can do to bring everything back into
balance, and art gives us that opportunity. Art teaches us to appreciate everything, no
matter how small. Through art, we may recognize the value and significance of
everything in our surroundings, even the bright side. The final purpose of creating art is
to spread awareness of what matters most. With art, we are given the means to
motivate individuals and inspire them to contribute beautifully to our society. It gives us

the willpower to shine in spite of the chaotic and disorganized world we live in. We all
understand how important art is to our lives and how it gives us a platform to express
ourselves. We might remark that while art can be attractive by the messages and
emotions it seeks to convey, it is not always physically beautiful. Don't undervalue the
motivation behind the visible art, as it inspires and motivates us to be better than we
are.

3. Explain the meaning of “And no wonder, for art is a powerful catalyst for such abilities as
power of imagination, keen intuition and the knack of association, abilities needed by both
scientists and philosophers.”

• The power of art to communicate knowledge in an evaluative manner that philosophy

and science require is its indispensable quality. No matter how compelling the
arguments and assertions of scientists and philosophers, they will not stick in people's
brains without the skill of expression. With art, it helps us to understand the impractical
and inexpressible ideas that have a big impact on the study of science and philosophy. A
wide range of imaginative possibilities will give philosophers and scientists the chance to
offer more precise and concrete evidence supporting the opinions of the opposite side
in terms of art.
