CHAPTER 1
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE AL3C MPU UNIT

1.1.1 Overall
The AGATE Link 3 Compact Main Processing Unit (AL3C MPU) hosts the software in charge of
the management and control of the vehicle.

It offers a set of communication and network resources shared with a number of other
embedded electronic systems.

The AL3C MPU is the master controller of the embedded networks.

The AL3C MPU is able to manage either a set of vehicles or one single vehicle.

It is compatible with all the major network protocols: FIP, LON, MVB (any type) and isolated
CAN.

It supports Ethernet interfaces for functional maintenance purposes.

1.1.3 Overall functioning

1.1.3.1 Functions achieved
The AL3C Main Processor Unit (MPU) hosts the software in charge of the management and the
control of the vehicle and offers a set of communication and network resources shared with a
number of other embedded electronic systems. The AL3C MPU is the master controller of the
embedded networks.

The AL3C MPU is able to manage either a set of vehicles or one single vehicle.

It is compatible with all the major network protocols: FIP, LON, MVB (any type), and isolated
CAN.

It provides also RS232 and RS485 serial links.

It supports two Ethernet interfaces for functional maintenance purposes.

1.3 DESCRIPTION OF INTERFACE INPUT/OUTPUT BLOCK DIAGRAM
1.3.1 Purpose
This section shows in a block diagram format the distribution of the input and output signals of
the AL3C MPU.

1.3.2 Control interface

(Ref. to Figure 1.1.1) [control unit I/O block diagram to be customized for the power supply and
extensions]

1.3.2.1 Power supply

Battery power is supplied to ALNX power supply which provides the stabilized power supplies
necessary for the control unit (ALNX:5V; 3.3V and 5Visolated) which are distributed to all cards
through the motherboard.
