 I have a vast experience in Fusarium isolation and Identification
 I have a wide knowledge and experience in screening germ plasm resulting from
deferent Agro-ecologies and different pathogens.
 I have abundant knowledge in micrometric work and identification of many
species/ micro organisms

hands-on training and motivate personnel.

1987 -1988 laboratory assistant –Namulonge research station
Activities
Under vertebrate pests and migratory Insects programme, laying traps in forests to
trap wild pigs (warthogs), monkeys, birds and other wild animals that destroy farmers
crops. Cutting transects in the forests to lay experiment for studies on the behaviour
of vertebrates and the migratory pests. Putting up field trials near the forests and
recoding the level of damage by the pests.
Taking the trapped pests in the laboratory, dissecting them and recoding what is
found in the alimentary canal. Preserving the specimens for future studies.
1989-96- Farming System Support Programme Agronomy programme
Activities:
1990-1992.Agriculral assistant at by then coffee research station –Kituza
Activities/ Responsibilities

 Carry out experiments on coffee, cocoa, and Oil palm in Agronomy and
Entomology research
 Data collection on coffee agronomy for example weeds assessment, measuring
of coffee agronomic characters, soil sampling.
 Supervised imposition of treatments for example fertilizer application, pesticides
and herbicides application.
 1993-1994 Assistant Agricultural officer (Trainee) in Bukalasa Agricultural
College under by then coffee research station –Kituza.
Activities/responsibilities
Carrying out research on the effect of weed control systems on weed flora and soil
on Robusta coffee.
Objectives

1997 -1999 - Laboratory Technician at Coffee Research Centre (COREC),
Pathology discipline
Activities:

 Collecting/receiving samples of diseased coffee with Tracheomycosis and other


diseases, isolate and identify the casual agent (pathogen). The same applies to
all other crops mandated to CORI
 Carrying out pathogenicity test (screening) on coffee varieties against
tracheomycosis.
 Under take field work collecting samples from diseased coffee and data taking on
several on farm field pathology experiments.
Job role, Duties and Responsibility

 Undertaking and supervising work assigned to pathology laboratory by scientists,


laboratory management and organisation.
 One of the laboratory coordinators towards the regional workshop on
tracheomycosis which took place successfully in July, 1997.
 Receive and catalogue all samples coming into the laboratory, carry out
laboratory analysis and preserve some pathogens where necessary for future
work.
 Assist scientists in experimental planning and designs

Job role, Duties and Responsibility


- Was in charge of Invitro multiplication of the six clones of Robusta coffee
using low frequency Somatic embryogenesis the first butch of the products
are now on field trial at Kawanda and so many on-farm trials in many agro
ecological zones.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Organization: National Coffee Research Institute (NaCORI) – National
Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), Kituza, Mukono
Position: Research Assistant (Entomology)

Duties and responsibilities:


 Data collection, management, entry and analysis using Excel, R, SAS, STAR,
SPSS packages.
 Studies on effects of shade on the Black Coffee Twig Borer (BCTB) and cof-
fee berry borer incidence and damage on Robusta coffee.
 Microbiological culturing on bio control of BCTB using Beauveria bassiana.
 Identification of alternate hosts of the pests.
 Cocoa baseline survey data collection and management in central region.
 Determining the prevalence, incidence and damage levels by different pests in
various coffee growing regions of Uganda and suggesting control measures to
farmers.
 Establishing the ecological drivers for disease and pest population dynamics
and damage levels on-station and in the diverse coffee agro-ecologies.
 Determining test pest preferences using an olfactometer.
 Determining species’ diversity of different pests and the associated fungal
complex samples collected from various plant hosts and coffee growing re-
gions.
 Evaluating the efficacy of traps and alcohol-based lures in managing different
pests.
 Evaluating effectiveness of different control measures such as pesticides in
managing the pests.
 Participating in agricultural exhibitions and coffee shows.
 Determining bee forage plants in coffee that gives the best quality honey.
 Establishing the flowering periods of important bee forage plants in coffee.
 Relating flowering periods of coffee to honey flow seasons.
 Documenting pests and diseases of honeybees existing in coffee apiculture.
 Assessing the prevalence of pests and diseases affecting honeybee colonies
in coffee apiculture.

The work I would wish to do in future


 My research interests are plant diseases, their impact on the lives of people and
the interaction of plant pathogens with their hosts.
 Pathology main topics, which I could wish to do related to coffee, include:
 Host-pathogen-environment interactions
 Etiology and epidemiology
 Effect of pre-harvest treatments on post-harvest disease control
 Molecular tools applied to pre/post harvest pathology studies
 Chemical and alternative disease control strategies
 Production and formulation of biocontrol agents
 Crop Protection, NACORI/NARO Research interests: I) Development of
quantitative models to facilitate prediction of plant diseases and design efficient
control strategies; II) Spatial-temporal dynamics of plant disease epidemics; III)
Impacts of climatic change on the geographical distribution of plant pathogens,
their life cycles and the epidemics they cause; and IV) Detection, monitoring and
quantification of plant disease epidemics by remote sensing. Am interested in

The work I have done in Agronomy, Entomology, Breeding, Pathology on coffee,
cocoa and Oil palm has been written up for PHD and Msc thesis for Dr.Wetala,
Dr.Musoli, Dr.Suzan Serani, Mr. Wasukira, Mr. Lubade and Mr. Wakinya,
Publications, Institute annual reports, internal Technical research reports.
This information has been the basis of resource materials for local seminars,
University teaching and for demonstration to farmers in disease and pest
management in particular and field crop management in general

Agriculture.

in Uganda.
