Task 2

• Read the text about teenagers and stress. Then read the statements below and decide whether
they are True (T) or False (F). Circle the right answer. One example is given.

Too many tests!

99% of British children feel stressed. What worries them the most? Research* has shown that children in
Britain don’t worry too much about their parents or friends. They are worried mostly about studying well at
school.

British parents say that their children are under stress because they have too many exams. Philip Pullman, a
famous children's writer, agrees with parents. “I want to change the way young people learn at school
because it isn’t fun. School pupils don't have time for anything at all: neither sports nor reading books. They
spend their time doing homework and getting ready for tests,” says Mr. Pullman.

Young people take about eighty seven exams during their school life. British schoolchildren take national
exams at the age of seven, eleven, fourteen, sixteen, seventeen and eighteen. At the age of seven, eleven and
fourteen students take SATs, which means Standard Assessment Tests. At the age of sixteen, they take
GCSEs, which means General Certificate of Secondary Education. At the age of seventeen and eighteen,
students take two more exams: AS-level and A-level exams.

Some young people are leaving school early because they think that it is difficult to pass all these exams.
Those who stay at school don't have time for sport, music and reading because they have so much
schoolwork to do. Do lots of tests help pupils learn more? No! Research shows that the more tests students
have, the less they work, and the poorer are their results.

British teachers try to make school less stressful. For example, teachers at a school in Birmingham let pupils
eat bananas in class while listening to classical music. Another school in Liverpool has a special quiet room
where pupils can go when they feel stressed. In this room pupils can smell flowers, have a hand and foot
massage or talk about their problems.

Task 3

• Read the text about smile and stress. Then match the headings (A-H) with the

paragraphs (1-6). There is one extra heading which you do not need to use.

Smile and stress

0. F
It is officially said that smiling is not only the most charming signal a girl can give, it helps her
live longer, have nice skin and live without stress. For most of us, every smile is as good as
taking medicine. The physical mechanism of smiling ‘feeds’ our brains with pleasure-giving
elements. American cardiologists are now saying that one sweet 60-second smile is worth 40
minutes of sleep.

1.
“Happiness,” says journalist Robert Holden, “is not only for lucky people. It’s a talent
everybody can develop.” Robert Holden teaches laughter therapy as part of his course in
Birmingham, UK. Each member of the group begins by practising smiling. "The brain cannot
tell the difference between a real smile and not a real smile," says Holden, "Both create a
feeling of happiness in the body."

2.
American psychologist R. B. Zajonc believes that it is possible to cure people who are
depressed. He cures them by teaching them special exercises for the face, like frequent smiling.
When a person smiles, many facial muscles work. This feeds our brains with pleasure-giving
elements. This makes a person forget about his worries.

3.
Smiling does more than just make you feel well. As you smile you use 13 facial muscles. The
result of this is that the people who like smiling usually have better smooth skin than those who
don't, because such people use 40 facial muscles every time they frown.*

4.
But hearty laughter is even better for your health than smiling. Hearty laughter makes the lungs
larger and exercises the heart at least as much as running. And laughter as a natural medicine
cleans our unhealthy system. French doctor Pierre Vachet showed that smiling is even better
than running. His studies also proved that smiling also strengthens the immune system.

5.
We should make a difference between smiling and laughing. Smiling is not a weak form of
laughter. "It is a way of attracting attention," says scientist Desmond Morris.

6.
That is why women, whose lips are on average bigger than men's, smile almost 50 per cent more. It
is time to charm those men, take them by the hand and sit down to a 10-minute course of good
smiling therapy. Smiling has one more good result. It releases* what Holden calls a 'natural
perfume' , a love smell which is very attractive.
