Irrigation Engineering Individual Assignment (10%)

1. What are the requirements for the success of an irrigation project?

2. A moist soil sample has a volume of 484cm3 in the natural state and a weight of 7.94N. The
dry weight of the soil is 7.36N and the relative density of the soil particle is 2.65. Determine
the Porosity ,Soil moisture content on weight basis and Volumetric moisture content
3. The following data were obtained in determining the soil moisture content at successive
depths in the root zone prior to applying irrigation water:
Depth of sampling Weight of moist soil sample Weight of oven-dried soil sample
0 – 25 cm 1.35 N 1.27 N
25 – 50 cm 1.36 N 1.26 N
50 – 75 cm 1.23 N 1.15 N
75 – 100 cm 1.11 N 1.02 N

The bulk specific gravity of the soil in the root zone is 1.5. Determine

a) The moisture content at different depths in the root zone

b) The moisture content in the entire root zone prior to irrigation
4. The field capacity and permanent wilting point for a given 0.8m root zone soil are 35 and 10
% respectively. At a given time the soil moisture in the given soil is 20% when a farmer
irrigates the soil with 250mm depth of water. Assuming the apparent specific gravity of the
soil as 1.6,determine the amount of water wasted from the consideration of irrigation
5. For the following data calculate the total available moisture and the soil moisture deficit
