How the alliance system drew the Great Powers into war in 1914
28 June:
- Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is assassinated by Bosnian Serbs
23 July:
- Austria accused Serbia of organising the assassination and gave Serbia an ultimatum - to basically
surrender their country
Serbia ignored this
28 July:
- After the Serbs refused, Austria declared war and attacked the Serbian capital Belgrade
29 July:
- The Russians started to prepare their army to help Serbia
- Germany told Russia not to help Serbia
Russia ignored this
1 August:
- Germany declared war on Russia.
- Germany started to move its army towards France and Belgium
3 August:
- Germany declared war on France and then invaded Belgium
- Britain demanded that Germany remove its troops from Belgium
Germany ignored this
4 August:
- Britain declared war on Germany
6 August:
- Austria declared war on Russia
