GARRISON Supsrintandent of Sexoole May 18, 2022 Dear Ms. Edelen: Lam in receipt of your correspondence sent pursuant to KRS 161.750 requesting a written statement providing the grounds upon which your non-renewal was hased. Principal Turner met with you and discussed performunce issues on several occasions. The following sets forth in summary form the reasons for the non-renewal, all of which are documented in your personnel file: 1. Lack of Professionalism ‘You demonstrated lack of professionalism in your communications and intersetions with supervisors and co-workers. On 10/6/2021 you were usked why the draft pacing guide for Unit 2 (just general information about what you are going to teach) and the standard was not completed, You stated you were too busy, The instructional coach asked you to begin creating lesson plans before you are dve to teach them and to prioritize curriculum and unit plans. She offered you advice on utilizing materials from the past and to modify them. On 11/2/21 you emailed an instructional couch and asked “what is the minimum Tcan do. ‘until T move on next year?” ‘On 12/7/22 you emailed that you were behind on the data collection expected for the next days PLC and you would need an extension to be more prepared. On 1/5/2022 Unit 2 analysis was ‘not complete after two extensions and a meeting had to be continued without data In October of 2021 you were absent from work without entering the absence into AESOP per district procedure, which is the system we utilize 10 obtain a sub. When Mr. Turner emailed you to ask why, you said his email was threatening and then lectured him how the absence procedure should be. You requested « meeting with Mr. Tumer to discuss this issue. When Mr. Turner met with you and the CEA rep you were unable to explain why the email was threatening and then you attempted to divert the conversation in the meeting to discuss other non-relevant matters. You displayed lack of respect for your Principal and lack of understanding of proper protocols and chain of command. H.Edelen-000004 ‘On 4/22/22 you were reminded about a deadline that you did not meet for data collection for your Tier Il students from the MTSS Behavior Coordinator. ‘On 5/10/22 you removed the Instructional coach from the Sixth Grade shared drive containing all resources created during ITEAM and the unit planning process. n 5/10/22 you did not come into the 6th grade testing session to monitor with your team of teachers. The expectations were clear that all teachers needed to monitor during testing. 2. Failure to Follow Policies/Abuse of Sick Leave ‘On 1/20/22 you put in absences as sick days to attend an event(s) in Washington D.C. unrelated to your duties as a teacher and left students without a teacher for a week. KRS 161.155 Q) states, “Sick leave shall be granted to a teacher or employee if be or she presents a personal affidavit or a certificate of a physician stating that the teacher or employee was ill, thatthe ‘teacher or employee was absent for the purpose of attending to a member of his or her immediate family who was il, or for the purpose of mourning a member of his or her immediate family.” ‘You affirmatively represented in the AESOP system that you were ill when that was not the case as your email stated “I will be in Washington D.C. April 3-9 2022”. Even if you had not made this misrepresentation in AESOP, your use of sick leave for a personal trip to Washington D.C. was an abuse of the District's sick leave policy. All of the above demonstrated a lack of professionalism; poor work ethic and work attitude; lack of respect for co-workers; as well as a failure or inability to follow established policies and procedures. As Superintendent of the Schools, I am responsible for all non-renewal decisions in the District, and my decision is final under KRS 161.750. ‘Thank you for your attention to this correspondence. This response is final and satisfies the requirements of KRS 161.750(2). Sincerely, Ge V2 Alvin L. Garrison ‘Superintendent H.Edelen-000005 HANNAH EDELEN Mr. Garrison, | want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to allow my hard work ethic, my enthusiasm, my resilieney, my professionalism, my advocacy, and my desire to improve outcomes for students come to life over the pas three yeas. What started es an email from me to you about making a difference in our ‘community transformed into full experience as an educator with the most incredible students. While am disappointed with administratively how things were handled, the use of misinformation to substantiate my non-renewal, and the denial ofan ext interview from both you and Mr. Tuner, | know that | have made a worthy impact, My value is recognized smongst my peers and most importantly. my students fet love. Of all these things, the greatest—love. I want to make note that while I have been in the school district, Ihave made a significant impact in the following ways over the past thre schoo! years: ‘* Purchased my own supplies and painted my own classroom both summers to ensure a clean and inviting room for students to enter. ‘+ Purchased over $4,000 worth of materials, curriculum decorations, and supplies to ensure student sueoess and inspiration within my classroom room with my personal income. Purchased over $300 worth of food incentives for my student classroom celebrations + Served as an ambassador and postive promoter of our schools. + Represent our school on the local, state, and national level through prestigious opportunities. Developed the modeling syllabus that has been used across grade levels and contents. Facilitated one of the first free book events where every student in the middle school received 2-3, new books fee of cost. '* Distributed over 1,000 books in the community through my nonprofit organization, Read Ready Kentucky. ‘© Collected over $500 worth of student incentive prizes that were distributed as part of PBIS. rewards. ‘© Transported over 300 pumpkins for the support of a Halloween event that was in the process of being planned. ‘© Mentored two students outside of teaching through Covington Partners '¢ Served as the HMS Representative in Covington Education Association and as a member of the PBIS Reward Team. ‘= Created spirit decorations (4 large balloon stands) that were used to welcome students back for return to schoo! (used on multiple occasions). (Materials for these were $80), ‘© Attended numerous outside events to suppor students and colleagues. ‘Secured a partnership to pay for the entire HIMS soccer team’s cleals in the amount of $1500. ‘© Worked collectively each day with the most amazing teams to make a difference in the lives of ‘our students at Holmes Middle School Tam proud of the impact that | have made within my school and community. My focus has and always ‘will be on improving outcomes for students as reflected in my work ethic and my financial and emotional investment. While itis disappointing that | will not be continuing as an educator in this district, Iwill Continue to be an advocate for our community and for our kids and their right to a quality education With Bulldog Pride, Ms. Edelen, Holmes Middle School (6° Grade Social Studies and English Language Ans Teacher H.Edelen-000007 Mr. Garrison, HANNAH EDRLEN ‘Thank you for your timely response to my request. Ths letter does not accurately reflect my work ethic, attitude, respect for others, and my following of procedures, Based on the instances luded and misrepresentation thereof, it appears that you have been provided with a significant amount of false information. ‘The letter states, “Principal Turner met with you and discussed performance issues on several ‘occasions.” This is not true. The only two conversations | had with Turner this year, outside of Planning initiatives for our students, is the October 18, 2021 conversation and the conversation ‘on May 10, 2022, regarding my non-renewal. Neither of these conversations included issues ‘elated to my performance or professionalism, ‘Additionally, there was nothing in my personnel file or evaluation sheets to reflect an issue of performance, adherence to school policies, or the meetings thereof. | find it troubling that five ‘out of the eight points made in the letter stem from an unnamed instructional coach who is not a certified evaluator. Also, two of the eight points were made after my non-renewal meeting, ‘which took place on May 10, 2022 prior to my 4" period class. | find it important te Include context in the situations mentioned in the letter as most, at best, an inaccurate representation of my work ethic, atitude, respect with others, and my following ‘of procedures, and, at worst, an attempt to slanderously discredit an educator with whom you disagree, with manipulated and false information to substantiate @ non-renewal.
