Finger-ring with a heavy, massive hoop, flat on the inside and curved on the exterior,
with geometric decoration in niello. The hoop ends in two stylised relief busts on either
side of the integral bezel. The bezel is disk-shaped and has the monogram BοΩΫACIOC
(Blasios), surmounted by the inscription + O MEοΩΫAXPHNOC (Melachrinos). The
owner of the ring probably belonged to the Melachrinos family known in the 13th-14th
century.

In this inscribed signet-ring, the hoop widens at the shoulder and ends in a circular bezel
with a flat surface, which is divided into two concentric circles by engraved lines. At the
centre is a cross-monogram; the outer circle is occupied by the inscription + TOY
EYMOP÷O–OYΥOY (of Eumorphopoulos) engraved in reverse. The name corresponds
with the cross-monogram, and the fact that it is engraved in reverse confirms that this is
a signet-ring. It probably belonged to a member of the aristocratic Eumorphopoulos
family of Mystras.

Athens, Byzantine Museum
The belt is composed of a chain of large rings, 1.1 cm. in diameter, linked together by
two smaller integral rings. One end consists of a simple hook, and the other of a pendant
crescent-shaped ornament. The inner side of the crescent has two arches, with two
smaller pendants hanging face to face from each of the resulting three points.
This valuable belt is one of the few Byzantine examples of its kind, which have been
demonstrated to be wedding presents, especially from the groom to the bride (Ross
1965, p. 39, citing the belt offered by the Syrian St. Alexios to the bride in the nuptial
chamber). This feature of the ornament is emphasised here by the open-work decoration
on the front of the crescent, where two peacocks face each other with the tree of life
between them, a motif symbolising the long life to which the main benediction in the
marriage ceremony refers.

AN UNUSUAL OPENWORK BRONZE PLAQUE IN THE FORM OF A LION, SPAIN OR SICILY, 10TH-12TH
CENTURY measurements note 20 by 18cm. the lion shown standing in profile to the left, with face head-on
and with one front paw raised in front and tail raised behind, with ring-punched and incised decoration This
plaque may have been mounted on a throne or other grand piece of furniture. The lion is part of the
iconography of royalty in many cultures, but has a notable ubiquity in Muslim culture in medieval Spain and
southern Italy. For a fuller discussion, see the footnote to lot 51, 16 October 2002. The configuration of the
lion here relates to the so-called "Basin of King Badis" of the Taifa period, eleventh-century Spain, in the
Museo Nacional de Arte Hispano-Musulm n, Granada (see The Art of Medieval Spain, A.D. 500-1200, New
York, 1993, no.34, pp.88-9). Estimate - 6000-9000
