DRAFT SOAL DAILY TEST 3 GRADE 12

1. Suga planted 40 seeds in a tree nursery. He read in a journal that probability of one of these seeds
growing is 0.2. Fifteen of Suga’ seeds grew. This led Suga to claim that the probability given by
journal was less than it should have been.
a. Using a 1% level of significance, find the critical region for the test above.
b. Stating your hypothesis clearly, what conclusion can you make from your answer to part (a).
c. What is the probability of Suga incorrectly rejecting the null hypothesis.

2. A drug for treating a particular minor illness cures, on average, 78% of patients. A pharmaceutical
company is trialling a new drug to treat this illness. Researchers at the company hope that a higher
percentage of patients will be cured when given this new drug. Twenty people with this minor
illness are selected at random and treated with the drug. Of these, 19 are cured.
a. By using 1% significance level, find the critical region for the test above.
b. Stating your hypothesis clearly, what conclusion can you make from your answer to part (a).
c. State the actual significance level of this test.

3. Past records show that the proportion of customers buying organic vegetables from Goong
Supermarket is 0.35. During a particular day, a random sample of 40 customers from Goong
Supermarket was taken and 18 of them bought organic vegetables.
a. At the 5% level of significance, investigate whether or not this provides evidence that the
proportion of the customers who bought organic vegetables has increased. State your
hypothesis clearly.

The manager of Goong Supermarket claims that the proportion of customers buying organic eggs
is different from the proportion of those buying organic vegetables. The manager decides to test
this claim by taking a random sample of 50 customers.

b. Using 5% level significance, find critical region to enable the Goong Supermarket manager to
test the claim. The probability for each tail of the region should be as close as possible to
2.5%.

During a particular day, a random sample of 50 customers from Goong Supermarket is taken and
8 of them bought organic eggs.

c. Using your answer in part (b), State whether or not this sample support the manager’s claim.
Use 5% significance level.
d. State the actual significance level of this test.

The proportion of customers who buy organic fruit from Goong Supermarket is 0.2. During a
particular day, a random sample of 200 customers from Goong Supermarket is taken. Using a
suitable approximation, the probability that fewer than 𝑛 of these customers bought organic
fruits is 0.0465 correct to four decimal places.
e. Find the value of 𝑛.

4. A web server is visited on weekdays, at a rate of 7 visits per minute. In a random one minute on
a Saturday, The web server is visited 10 times.
a. (i) Using a 10% level of significance, investigate whether or not there is evidence that the rate
of visits is greater on a Saturday than on weekdays. State your hypothesis clearly.
b. State minimum number of visits required to obtain a significant result.

In a random two minute period on a Saturday, The web server is visited 20 times.
c. Using a suitable approximation, at 10% level of significance, check whether or not the rate of
visits is greater on a Saturday.
