Class 12 - Chemistry
Time Allowed: 1 hour Maximum Marks: 25

General Instructions:
ALL QUESTIONS ARE COMPULSORY

Section A
1. Illustrate the name reaction Wolff-Kishner reduction. [2]
2. How would you bring about the following conversions (any two): [2]
i. Propanal to butanone?
ii. Benzaldehyde to benzophenone?
iii. Benzyl chloride to benzonitrile?
3. Identify the compounds A, B and C in the following reaction. [2]
+
M g/ether (i) C O2 C H3 OH/H

C H3 − Br −−−−−→ (A) −−−−−−→ (B) −−−−−−−→ (C)

(ii) W ater Δ

4. Arrange the following compounds in the increasing order of their property as indicated: [2]
i. CH3COCH3, C6H5COCH3, CH3CHO (reactivity towards nucleophilic addition reaction)

ii. Cl-CH2-COOH, F-CH2-COOH, CH3-COOH (acidic character)

5. Arrange the following compounds in the decreasing order of their boiling points: [2]
C H3 C H2 C H2 CHO, C H3 C H2 C H2 C H2 OH, H5 C2 − O − C2 H5 , C H3 C H2 C H2 C H2 C H3

6. How will you carry out the following conversion? [2]

7. Why aliphatic amines are stronger bases than aromatic amines? [2]
8. Give the structures of A, B, and C in the following reactions: [2]

Section B
9. An organic compound (A) (molecular formula C8H16O2) was hydrolysed with dilute sulphuric [3]

acid to give a carboxylic acid (B) and an alcohol (C). Oxidation of (C) with chromic acid produced
(B). (C) on dehydration gives but-1-ene. Write equations for the reactions involved.
10. Give reasons for the following: [3]
a. Carboxylic acids do not give characteristic reactions of carbonyl group.
b. Treatment of benzaldehyde with HCN gives a mixture of two isomers which cannot be
separated even by careful fractional distillation.
c. Sodium bisulphite is used for the purification of aldehydes and ketones.

1/2
11. How will you convert: [3]
i. Benzene into aniline
ii. Benzene into N, N-dimethylaniline
iii. Cl-(CH2)4-Cl into hexan-1, 6-diamine?
