LEADERS IN TRAINING

Leaders and your Temperament.

The purpose of this article is to train you in knowing some of your strength and
weaknesses as a leader.
You might be surprised that why after you left, the people were coping well with the
new leader and why was your tenor in leadership so hard like this. Its not because of the
people, probably your temperament and your personality were not adjustable or
welcome by the people. Or there was something lacking in your leadership delivery
through your personality or character.
After learning this, you’ll need to put more adjustment to your leadership style and let
the Spirit of God guide you in your dealings with people.
Solomon prayed to God that the people are so strong. He needs the power of
intelligence to follow them and God granted him.
By human psychology, we have placed a better measure and have done research on
how you can know people and work with them and how you can motivate them as well.

SPIRIT CONTROLLED TEMPERAMENT

Dr Tim Layhaye, president of Family Life ministries in Washington, D.C has conducted
more than 800 two-day Family Life Seminars throughout U.S and Canada. He has
authored over thirty books with a total of nine million copies in print. Dr. Layhayeh lives
in Virginia with his wife Berverly
INTRODUCTION
A brief history of the four temperaments dates back to 3000 years ago in proverb 30
verse 11. About 500 years later, the four kinds of people were given names by
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. Around A.D 200 Galen, a Greek doctor
came up with a detailed list of the strength and weaknesses of the four.
However, other attempts of classifying people has been made but the best is the
temperament theory.
1. YOU WERE BORN WITH IT
To properly understand temperament’s control over our actions and reactions, we need
to understand and carefully distinguish three terms.

• TEMPERAMENT
Temperament is the combination of inborn traits that subconsciously affect our
behaviors. These traits are hereditary and are arranged at the time of conception. 6
people contribute to the gene pool to the make-up of every baby:
-2 parents
-4 grand parents

• CHARACTER

Character is the real you. It is referred to as the hidden man of the heart “in 1Peter 3:4.
It is the combination of your temperament, training, moral values, believes and habit
patterns. It is sometimes referred to as the soul which is made of the mind, and will.
The people you meet and the environment you find yourself makes up your character.

• PERSONALITY
Personality is the out-ward expression of oneself which may or may not be the same as
the persons character depending on how genuine the person is. Many are acting a part
today on the basis of what they think they should be as a person, rather than what they
really are. “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the lord looks at the heart “1sam
16:17. The place to change behavior is inside man, not outside.
In summary, temperament is the combination of traits we were born with; character is
our ‘civilized temperament and personality is the “face” we show to others.
Men and women may have the same temperament, but the extent of emotional
expression may vary.

TEMPERAMENT CAN BE MODIFIED

It is impossible to change one’s temperament. It can only be modified. Its only Jesus
Christ through the Holy Spirit that can help modify the temperament. Apostle Paul puts
it this way:
“O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God---
through Jesus Christ our Lord “Rom 7:24-25.
Temperament weaknesses can be strengthened (2cor 5:17). Since temperament is our
“old nature” what we need is a “new nature is imparted to us when we receive Jesus
Christ into our lives by faith peter calls it being “partakers of the nature… 2pet 1:4
However, most Christians are experiencing this transforming power of the Holy spirit is
that they do not regularly experience the power of the spirit-filled life (Eph 5:18-21)

2. MEET THE FOUR BASIC TEMPERAMENT
The names of the four basic temperaments were given by the Greek physician,

(phlegmatic).

FURTHER TEST TO GIVE YOURSELF

This will enable you to know your temperament

If you are not satisfied with the accuracy of the above temperament blob. Ask
yourself these questions in order to identify your Primary temperament
1. Are you an extrovert or introvert
2. Are you a spontaneous quick talker
3. Do you have to apologize frequently
4. Do you have high emotional responses
5. Are you quick and slow of speech
6. Are you a good speller
7. Do you do well at math and details
8. Do you get depressed easily
if your answer to question 1 is extrovert and you answer yes to 2-4, your primary
temperament is probably Sanguine. If only one of 2-4, you are probably a Choleric
temperament.
If you answered 1 that you are an introvert and yes to 6-8, your primary temperament is
probably melancholy. But if you said yes to 5 and you do not get depressed very often,
your predominant temperament is probably Phlegmatic.
Obviously, this is a very casual analysis, but it can serve as an interesting check on the
accuracy of the predominant temperament in your bolb chart.
NOTE: The fruit of the Spirit is for our emotions, it is only the fruit of the Spirit that
covers the Temperament weaknesses.
As we draw this to a close, lets us briefly look at the temperament problems

TEMPERAMENT PROBLEMS
The sanguine Leader type enjoys people and then forgets them.
The Melancholy Leader is annoyed with people but let them go their crooked ways
The choleric Leader makes use of people for his own benefit; afterward ignores them.
The phlegmatic Leader studies people with supercilious indifference.
This makes all the temperament appears hopeless. But this is never the case when the
Ministry of the HOLY SPIRIT is included.
You must know that the Temperament is mainly the outward man/flesh. That’s why the
Bible says that if we live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do
MORTIFY the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (Romans 8:13)

LEADERS IN TRAINING MANUAL +2347086771113.

So, our circumstances do not have to determine our reactions.
Neither show our temperament ruin our leadership.
When you meet with someone whose temperament doesn’t blend with yours, you tend
to become aggressive with them. That is not the way leadership should be handled.
Everything must not be right from your own perspectives only. But from the true
perspectives. That happens when you keep self aside.
As leaders, when making appointment. This temperament will help you in the right
selection of people at the right place and the right man for the right duty so that you
can make your ends meet.

HOW TO HANDLE YOUR WEAKNESSES (HEB 12:1-2)

A man was arrested for committing a crime and when asked why he committed the
crime, he said; “my temperament made me do it”. Do you think they will let him go
because of that?
Is there any remedy for these weaknesses? Can a sanguine be disciplined; a choleric
gentle and meek; a melancholy optimistic; and a phlegmatic selfless? Emphatically Yes!
No matter how chronic your weakness is, there is remedy, there is help available.
• Temperament traits of a Spirit- filled life Gal 5:22-23
• Strength for every weakness – Heb 11:34
• Getting filled with the Holy Spirit Eph 5:8
