Situation Of Indian Women in The Patriarchal Indian Society

ever since we got independence, we have been constantly talking

about the concept of human rights, we have been talking about
the idea of ‘dignity for all. Although in the Indian context it’s very
hard to find the pinnacle of these concepts.

In today’s India we are having all time high stats of crime against
women, be it rape, be it murder, be it honor killing, be it dowry
killing, and be it marital rapes.

It seems like we have lost the dominance of law in the state.

The cases of heinous crimes in India, like,

1- What happened with the perpetrators of the Nirbhaya case

how they were sentenced after a 7-year-long period?
2- How the perpetrators of the bilkis bano case were released
by the Gujrat high court, how they were welcomed by the
people with garlands and some political slogan chants, and
believe the Political person who called the rapers “sanskari
fellows’ won the election from the same Godhra
constituency.
3- We all have seen what happened with the hathras rape and
murder victim, how her family was forced to perform her
antim sanskar by the state’s own executive machinery.
4- It’s hard to believe that the Chawla rape case of 2012 is
still under trial, it was just yesterday when the lawyers of
the victim’s parents seek urgent listening before the court.

5- We all know what happened with shraddha walker, how she

was brutally murdered by her own boyfriend.

Perhaps, in last few decades we are constantly having cases of

heinous crime against a specific gender community.

The significance of women’s consent is nearly narrowed down to

the Bollywood movies, we as humans have lost the morals of
respecting women, we have lost the significance of the phrase
‘NO MEANS NO’, and that is why these days we are having a
debate over marital rapes.

If you will trace the causes of these crimes, you will find that
there are 3 or 4 major issues which are hyping the motivation for
such crimes.

Like, these days the dignity and respect for women are replaced
by growing consumerism, women are just considered as a sex
object and a re-generating machine in the Indian patriarchal
society.

In our society, the law has failed to have a deterrence value, to

overcome this situation our locus point should be at the surety of
punishment instead of the quantum of punishment.

In the background of all those cases, it seems like we are yet to

develop the culture of human rights in our country, and the
country signifies the grassroots not on the glossy sheets of some
prestigious newspaper articles but on the shining displays of
academia and ResearchGate.

Though, the Indian government has done a lot to upgrade the

status of women and prevent them from such heinous crimes.

After having a full bucket of laws and rights, still, women is

suffering from domestic violence, gender discrimination,
molestation, etc. and its fundamental cause is that we have
shifted our locus to the quantum of punishment instead of the
surety of punishment, in my opinion, this problem should be
addressed and the surety of punishment have to bring into
priority, and for the same reason our society is not following the
laws but more concerned about there so-called traditions of evil
nature and so-called teachings of their ancestors.

Illiteracy can also be the cause for such discrimination and

crimes, because there are people who are illiterate but send their
daughters to schools and want them not to become like them, on
the other hand, there are people who are literate and well aware
but do discrimination against the female of their family.

the environment in which we are living is the primary cause of

such discrimination, “Patriarchal Indian Society” considered the
woman to be a lifelong dependent upon others, in childhood on
her father, in adulthood on her husband, and in old age on her
son. Hence Indian women began to be suppressed. This led to
the gripping of the orthodox beliefs leading to violence against
women, both at the familial level and at the social level
physically, emotionally, and mentally

In our society a sought of social engineering is needed to

remove discrimination based on gender, and we have to ensure
that through this engineering we have to restore the sense of
respect for women, which was prevalent in the back days of our
culture.

I will urge you by calling, this is the time to change, and that
change must not be followed by any catastrophe or any extreme
circumstances (like rape and murder) but it should be entrenched
within the very fragment of our basic living.
I would love to encourage you to be the voice of her dignity,
urge yourself to be a part of that change, bring the change from
your own family, and your society, and commence the change
from yourself.

I would also like to request every educational institution to

conduct seminars, to conduct workshops, so that every single of
us could encounter the situation, a situation which is a matter of
shame for every single person who calls himself a human being.

Remember my words, the environment in which we are living a

parent can trust their daughters, but not the society and we are
the society.

CONCLUSION

Though the Indian Government has done a lot to upgrade the

status of women in the society

there are so many laws for women, there are many schemes for
the girl child and the women other than this ………………………………
human rights, legal rights, constitutional rights are there but still
the women are facing discrimination in the family and society.

Still, women are suffering from domestic violence, gender

discrimination, molestation, etc. it might be because society is not
following the laws they are more much concerned about the
traditions, so-called traditions of evil nature, and the teachings of
their ancestors. They do not want to give up what they are
following for ages.

Illiteracy is the main cause of the discrimination against women

but it is not the only cause because there are people who are
illiterate but they send their daughters to schools and want them
not to become like them and on the other side there are people
who are well educated and do discrimination against female
members of their family. There are cases registered for domestic
violence by women of well-off families. In this way, we cannot
say that illiteracy is the main cause of discrimination.

The Environment in which we are living is also the cause of what

we are thinking because we behave more like what others are
following.

So, it may be one of the causes. Lastly, that in India social

engineering is needed to remove discrimination on the basis of
gender. Laws are not much effective if we are not educated by
the mind. It is high time to change the mindset regarding women
and remember that change must not be followed by any
catastrophe but it should be entrenched within the very fragment
of our basic living.
Thank you very much.
