Aspiring Wake Forest University art student Sophia (Britt

Robertson), just months from graduation and a prestigious internship at a

gallery in New York City, gets dragged away from her studying by her
sorority sisters for a bull riding competition and watching “THE hottest
guys” try to ride angry bulls, and while there meets one-time professional
bull riding champion Luke (Scott Eastwood), competing to rebuild his
career after an injury derailed it a year before. Their eyes meet and the
sparks fly, but at first it just seems like a case of poor timing, with Sophia’s
imminent departure and Luke’s commitment to continuing his career.
Those hastily-drawn conclusions are called into question when the
couple come upon a roadside accident while driving home from their first
date, and pull the elderly driver from the burning wreck, along with a box
full of old letters next to him in the passenger seat. When he wakes in the
hospital, Ira (Alan Alda) seems to wish he hadn’t been pulled from the car,
but eventually opens up to Sophia about the contents of the box, a collection
of letters written to his life’s great love, his wife Ruth. Sophia visits Ira daily
and reading the letters to him as he recovers, and the two develop a bond as
the letters tell of Ira and Ruth’s romantic past, their separation as Ira was
called to serve during World War II, his return and their efforts to build a
life despite encountering a number of challenges to their marriage that seem
almost insurmountable.
As conflicting paths, and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and
Luke make an unexpected and fateful connection with Ira, whose memories
of his own decades-long romance with his beloved wife deeply inspire the
young couple. Spanning generations and two intertwining love stories, THE
LONGEST RIDE explores the challenges and infinite rewards of enduring
love.
