IMRAN QURESHI
Influenced by the tradition of
16th century Mughal miniature art,
Imran Qureshi creates abstract
paintings and site-specific
installations. His practice combines
decorative motifs and traditional
techniques with conceptual and
contemporary painting styles.
ABOUT
• Imran Qureshi born 1972 in Hyderabad , Pakistan. He is a
Pakistani painter and installation artist .
• Qureshi studied miniature painting at the National College
of Art.
• There he was the first chairman of a puppeteer club in
1992.
• In the 1990s, Qureshi increasingly turned away from
miniature paintings towards large-scale paintings and
installations.
• In his works he mainly uses traditional elements of
the Mughal tradition, which he combines with abstract
painting.
• Currently, he lives in Lahore. Where he teaches at the
National College of Art.
Studies and work
• He studied miniature painting at the National College of
Arts in Lahore, where he now teaches the discipline.
• Considered one of Pakistan's most important artists, he
has received international recognition for his site-specific
installations that respond to architectural space,
referencing the historical or political significance of the
buildings that contain them.
• These include Blessings Upon the Land of My Love, created
in 2011 for the Sharjah Biennial, and They Shimmer Still,
created for the Biennale of Sydney in 2012.
• In 2013, he created a large-scale, site-specific work for The
Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Roof Garden Commission in
New York.
• The same year he was awarded the Deutsche Bank’s
Artist of the Year and received his first solo exhibition
in Europe at the Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle in Berlin.
• His work has since been shown in numerous solo
exhibitions, including at the Barbican Centre, London
(2016) and Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, Aalborg,
Denmark (2016), as well as realising site-specific
projects at the Washington National Cathedral,
Washington, D.C. (2018) and Al Ain, Abu Dhabi,
United Arab Emirates (2018), among others.
Theme of his work
• Qureshi’s art plays with natural elements, floral
prints and designs but these are marred using a very
visually violent approach.
• Red splatters of blood are a common running theme
in all of his art pieces, signifying a very cruel, man-
made destructive force at war with the natural
landscape.
• One piece which stands out simply by its sheer
magnitude is a sculptural installation made up of
endless crumpled sheets of red stained paper.
