PILOT ‘Integrated Sediment Management in
Reservoirs’
• Full scale pilot project

• Funded by Dutch Government and Consortium Partners

• Implementation at UJVNL Dakpathar Barrage

16
PILOT ACTIVITIES
Phase 1. Data collection and extensive studies/modelling

- Site visit
- Gathering of data (soil survey, bathymetric data, sedimentation
rates etc)
- Developing an morphological model of the reservoir
- Model scenario simulations and analysis (hydrodynamic
behaviour, impact of dredging and re-use)
- Map potential for re-use of sediment
- Develop implementation plan for sediment management
(dredging and re-use) at Dakpathar Barrage

Example reservoir model, Deltares

PILOT ACTIVITIES
Phase 2. Project implementation (dredging and re-use)
Dredging
- Mobilisation of equipment
- Dredging with IHC TT-Pump from pontoon
- Transport of dredged sediment through pipeline

Characteristics TT-Pump
• Compact submergible dredge pump
• Equipped with jet nozzles to boost production
• Widely applicable (pontoon, crane etc.)
• Depth > 50m
• Highly wear-resistant
PILOT ACTIVITIES
AFTER DREDGING > SEDIMENT PROCESSING

CHALLENGES
• What to do with the dredged sediments?

Relocation of sediments
• Lack of space (mountainous areas)
• Difficult logistics

INTEGRATED CIRCULAR SEDIMENT MANAGEMENT

• Reuse of sediment based on soil type, characteristics
and local circumstances
• Additional revenue > more cost efficient
• Long-term strategy
Examples of re-use possibilities for dredged sediments
SEDIMENT PROCESSING > DEWATERING
CHALLENGES
• Long dewatering time of (especially) fine materials after disposal

DEWATERING WITH GEOTEXTILE TUBES

Low cost & efficient dewatering method
• After dredging sediments are pumped into geotextile tubes
• Water flows away, sediments are trapped inside the tube
• Fine materials can be dewatered in just a couple of weeks
SEDIMENT PROCESSING > AFTER DEWATERING
> CIRCULAR SEDIMENT MANAGEMENT
SEDIMENT PROCESSING
• Create land (fertile soil can be used to create land within the reservoir or region)
• Re-use of (specific types of) soil. For example to create building material or to
create scour protection for wind turbine installations etc.
• Use as a guiding baffle to concentrate or to redirect (sedimentation) flow
• Bank or shore protection in up- and downstream of reservoir

Both constructive and non-constructive

PILOT ACTIVITIES
Phase 3. Follow up and future upscaling

- Developing a long-term strategic plan to establish

and maintain operational and safety aspects of the
dams and reservoirs
- Use this plan to show stakeholders how to procure
and execute future reservoir sediment management
projects
- Creating a marketing package (film + paper) about
implementation and outcome of the pilot in India
