HYDROELECTRIC

ENERGY

DISCUSSANT: ELISE BRIXE S. CUBOL

LARRA MAY S. CABAYAO
OBJECTIVES:
 Were going to explain the advantages and
disadvantages of hydroelectric energy.
 To know how it works and its uses
PRE TEST ( ADVANTAGE OR DISADVANTAGE

1. A renewable form of energy.

2. Clean and safe energy.
3. A reliable source of energy
4.Low operating cost.
5.Expensive construction.
HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY

.Is a very important energy source, both nationally and worldwide.

.Is a renewable form of energy produced by the moving water.
.Is operated by requiring a large artificial reservoir of water called the Dam.
ADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY

. A Renewable form of Energy

Hydroelectric power is run by water that is recycled back to the earth through the process of the water cycle .
∙Clean and safe energy
∙A Reliable source of Energy

The construction of dams is long lasting ,therefore, there will be a reliable source of hydroelectric energy.
Low Operating Cost

The hydroelectric energy requires a low cost of maintenance and operation. Therefore the supply of energy is also for long time duration and a
long term for the saving.
Disadvantage of Hydroelectric Energy

Expensive construction
creating hydroelectric power plants and dams need a sufficient budget in order to create a high standard hydroelectric power .
Destroying wetlands/lands

The water that flows from the dam creates a flood on the rivers or in the wetlands bodies affecting the organism living on it.
Enviromental Intervention

The creation of the reservoirs of water or dams intervenes not only in reshaping and changing the
condition of the bodies of water but also to the condition of the fish species .
Dependency

The Hydroelectric power is

dependent on the availability of
water. However, when drought
comes, the amount of water supply
will be limited.
HOW IT WORKS AND ITS USES
THREE TYPES OF HYDROPOWER

1. IMPOUNDMENT
2. DIVERSION
3. PUMPED STORAGE
IMPOUNDMENT

. Is the most common of

hydroelectric power
plant. Uses a dam to
store river water in
reservoir, water released
from the reservoir flows
to turbine, spinning it,
which in turn activates a
generator to produce
electricity.
DIVERSION

. Sometimes called run-

of-river, facility a
channels a portion of a
river through a canal or
penstock. It may not
require the use of a dam.
PUMPED STORAGE
.
works like a battery,
storing the electricity
generated by other
power sources like
solar,wind and
nuclear for later use.
Stores the energy by
pumping water uphill
to reservoir at a lower
