TITLE: OSMOSIS

AIM: To investigate osmosis using an English potato.

APPARATUS: potatoes, cork borer, measuring cylinders, beakers, triple beam balance, filter paper, white
tile, knife, sugar, digital scale

METHOD:
1. Using a cork borer remove 12 potato cylinders from the potatoes.
2. Trim each cylinder so that they all have a starting mass of 2g.
3. Gather 6 beakers and label them 0-5. Place two potato cylinders in each.
4. Make sugar solutions ranging from 0g/100ml to 5g/100ml.
5. Pour the different sugar solutions into each beaker according to their labels.
6. Leave for 24 hours. At the end of 24 hours remove the potato cylinders from the beakers.
7. Use a filter paper to blot excess water from the cylinders and measure and record the new masses.
8. Calculate the average change in mass for the potatoes in different sugar solutions and use the results
to plot a line graph.
RESULTS:
