Here are 8 games that are easy to make to help your child practice skills at

home. Some games can be easily adapted to practice letter names, letter sounds,
number recognition, word families, or sight words.

Go Fish

Write each letter, number, or word on an index card 4 times each. Deal each player 7 cards and put
the remaining cards face down in a pile. Players take turns asking other players for a match. If
nobody has a match you draw a card from the pile. The first player to have all of their cards
matched up is the winner.

Rainbow Writing

Using a piece of scrap paper or a dry erase board, have your child write down letters, numbers, or
words that they need to practice. Have your child trace each several times in different colors saying
the letter, number, or word out loud as they are tracing.

Play Pop!

Use popsicle sticks to create this game. Write one letter, number, or word on each stick. Write the
word “POP!” on 5 sticks. Place all the sticks in a cup with the writing side towards the bottom. Take
turns picking sticks. When you pick a stick if the player is able to read the stick correctly they get
to keep the stick. If they incorrectly identify the stick, they must put it back in the cup. If they
pick a stick with the word “POP!” on it, they must put All their sticks back in the cup. (Leave the
“POP!” stick out each time it is chosen.) The player with the most sticks at the end of the game
wins. Created by: Kristen Stefanko
Magnetic Letter/Numbers

Using magnetic letters or numbers (which can often be found at the dollar store) build words or sight
words on a cookie sheet. You can also have your child build the words on the refrigerator and have
them read the word each time they walk past it.

Swiss Cheese Word Cards

Pick 10 sight words for your child to practice. Try picking 5 words they know and 5 words that they
need extra practice with. Write each word on an index card. Punch a hole in the top corner and place
the 10 word cards on a ring. Each time your child reads a word correctly let them make a punch in the
card. (If you do not have a hole punch you can have them put a sticker on instead.) As your child
practices more, the word cards should start to look like swiss cheese. Each week add more cards to
the ring and continue to practice.

Make a book

You can have your child make a book to practice letters, numbers, or the word family skill for the
week. This can be done in a notebook or even just staple pages of scrap paper together. If you
are practicing letters you can write the letter at the top and have your child cut out or draw pictures
of things that begin with that letter. For numbers you can have them draw different ways to show a
given number. You can also write the weekly word family at the top and have your child draw or cut out
pictures of words belonging to that word family.

Build words with Play Doh

Using Play Doh, have you child practice forming letters, numbers, or words. They can also build sight
words or words from our weekly word families.

Play Memory

Write each word on an index card two times. Shuffle the cards and place the word cards face down in
a random order. Players take turns flipping over two cards at a time to try to make a match. If the
words match they keep the cards, if not they are turned back over and it’s the next player’s turn.
The player must be able to read the words in order to keep them. When all the word cards are gone
the game is over. The player with the most matches at the end is the winner.
