GMset Functional units
General features

GMset switchgear is made up of interconnected functional units.

Each functional unit contains all the elements needed to perform its function:
b a gas-insulated, metalclad cubicle, for indoor use,
b a circuit breaker using SF6 as a breaking medium, sealed for life,
b a digital protection and control system.

Power connections are made between functional units by a busbar set located inside
a SF6 compartment. Steady electrical continuity of all metal frames is ensured by
connection of each functional unit’s earthing busbar to the switchgear’s main
earthing circuit.
Low voltage wiring ducts are provided in the switchgear, above the low voltage
compartments.

Cubicle
The cubicle is a set of earthed, metal-enclosed, gas insulated switchgear that
complies with the requirements of the IEC 60298 standard.

The cubicle comprises four independent compartments, in accordance with the

definition of “metalclad” switchgear given in the standard.

The busbar compartment, using SF6 as an insulating medium, is situated in the top
of the unit and it contains:
b main busbars,
b three-position disconnector.

The circuit breaker compartment, using SF6 as the medium, is located in the
central part of the cubicle, linked to the top part part with the busbar compartment by
means of a bushing insulator. It contains:
b disconnectable circuit breaker,
b connections

The MV connections compartment is situated in the bottom of the cubicle and it

contains:
b MV cable bushing connectors,
b current transformers,
b voltage transformers.

The Low Voltage compartment, separated from the medium voltage section, is
located in the top of the unit and it contains the low voltage auxiliaries and the
monitoring unit.

General arrangement
Five basic cubicle layouts are offered:
b incoming or outgoing feeder AD1/AD2
b incoming or outgoing feeder with separated earthing switch AD1-ES
b bus section CL1/CL2
b the busbar metering with disconnector TT1
b busbar metering and earthing TT1-ES

Disconnectable circuit breaker

GMset units use the following circuit breakers:
b SF1-P up to 1250A - 24kV - 25kA
b SF1-G up to 2000A - 24kV - 25kA
The circuit breakers are designed in accordance with IEC 62271-100 standard and
they comply with the definition of «pressure sealed systems» given in IEC 60298
standard, appendix GG.
They are “puffer” type and use SF6 gas as a breaking and isolating medium. The
circuit breakers are maintenance free for life. In case of necessity they can be
replaced in short time because the main connections are made by sliding contacts.

Current and voltage transformers
and live line testing

In the protection system, the functional units are fitted with transformers designed to
supply the measurements and/or protection circuits:
b current transformers,
b voltage transformers,
v CSH core balance current transformers.

The live parts are totally encapsulated in an integral epoxy resin molding
which serves a dual function:
b it ensures electrical insulation,
b it guarantees excellent mechanical resistance of the assembly.

Current transformers
AD1 and AD2 units
ARF / ARL type toroidal-core current transformers are located around the switchgear
bushings. The toroidal core accommodates the secondary windings, the switchgear
bushing is the primary winding.
The transformers have primary current values from 50A to 1250A and secondary
current 1A or 5A.

CL1 and CL2 units

ARJA1 type conventional current transformers, located in the bus-section unit.
ARF type ARJA1 type The transformers have primary current values from 500A to 2500A and secondary
current 1A or 5A.
Schneider has a standardized list of CTs that are appropriate for use with digital
protections to simplify the determination of accuracy characteristics.
This list is available on request.

Voltage transformer
VRT4 type metal shielded voltage transformers, located in the cable compartment.
They have one insulated MV end with plug-in connector, for connection between
earth and phase conductors in 3-phase systems.
The cores and windings are overcast in epoxy resin, providing electrical insulation.
The external surface is metal shielded.

VRT4 type CSH core balance current transformers

The CSH core balance current transformers, designed by Schneider, provide more
sensitive protection by direct measurement of earth fault current.
They will be housed in the cable trench at the bottom of the unit.
They can be connected to either of Sepam current inputs: 2A or 30A.

CSH type

VPIS (Voltage Presence Indicator System)

Standard
This indicator is in conformity with the standards specifically dealing with VPIS: IEC
61958.

Rationalisation
Since it is designed for all MV products ranges this new VPIS will be used for other
products such as SM6, RM6, etc.
Its new design integrates better with the earthing switch unit as a whole.
The indicator lights are incorporated in the unit in this new version.

17 Schneider Electric
GMset Apparatus
SF1-G and SF1-P circuit breakers

SF1-G and SF1-P circuit breakers

b The SF1-G and SF1-P circuit breakers are “puffer“ type and use SF6 gas as a
breaking and insulating medium.
They are composed of three poles mounted on a base which supports
the operating mechanism.
According to IEC 60298 App. GG (1987), the circuit breaker is defined as a sealed
pressure system, that is an assembly for which no further gas processing is required
during its expected operating life.
b The fundamental feature of the circuit breaker- essential for the very concept of a
fully gas insulated switchgear- is its very high dependability which means:
v high reliability,
v long mechanical life: the circuit breakers are tested for 10,000 (class M2)
mechanical operations with no need to replace parts with only ordinary maintenance
of the operating mechanism,
v long electrical life: the capacity of breaking load and short circuit current is much
higher than it is normally required in 30 years of operational life. The circuit breakers
comply for the electrical endurance life whit IEC 62271-100 (class E2) standard.
v no need for any maintenance on the active parts,
v manufactured under a fully quality assurance program.

Puffer type: operating principle

The main contacts and arcing contacts are initially closed (fig 1).
Precompression (fig 2)
When the contacts begin to open, the piston slightly compresses the SF6 gas
in the pressure chamber.
Arcing period (fig 3)
The arc strikes between the arcing contacts. The piston continues its downward
movement.
fig.1 fig.2 A small quantity of gas, directed by the insulating nozzle, is injected across the arc.
For the breaking of low currents, the arc is cooled by forced convection.
However, for high currents, thermal expansion causes the hot gases to move toward
the colder parts of the pole unit.
The distance between the two arcing contacts becomes sufficient for the current
to be broken when it reaches the zero point, due to the dielectric properties of SF6.
Sweeping overstroke (fig 4)
The moving parts finish their movement and the injection of cold gas continues until
the contacts are completely open.

SF1-G and SF1-P range circuit breakers are actuated respectively by GMh and RI
operating mechanisms that ensure switching device closing and opening speed that
is indipendent of the operator. The operating mechanisms, which are always
motorized, can perform remote control funtions and implement fast reclosing cycles.
The operating mechanisms are located outside the SF6 compartment. Maintenance
is reduced by using self lubrificating parts.

GMh and RI electrical operating mechanisms include:

b a spring system which stores the energy needed to close and open the breaker,
b a manual spring charging system,
b an electrical motor spring charging device that automatically recharges the
mechanism as soon as the contacts close (time ≤ 15 s),
b two mechanical push-buttons on the front panel for opening and closing,
b an electrical closing system including:
v a closing release for remote control and an anti-pumping relay.
b an electrical “opening” release system featuring one or more releases of the
following types:
v shunt,
v undervoltage*
v low power-consuming mitop**,
b operation counter,
b a mechanical “charged-discharged” position indicator of closing springs,
b a closing springs end-of-charging contact (NO or NC),
b a mechanical “open-closed” position indicator,
b a multi-pin connector for isolating auxiliary circuits.

Auxiliary contacts
The GMh and RI operating mechanisms are equipped with auxiliary contacts. The
number of available contacts depends on the composition of the operating
mechanism and the options chosen. However at least three CO contacts are
available on the switchgear outgoing terminal block for the external signals.

Cable terminations

The switchgear is designed for the use of plug-in terminations according to

DIN 47636, CENELEC EN 50181 Interface “C”.
It is possible to connect up to two cables (1/3-core cable) for each phase with a max.
cable cross section of 630mm2.
In order to simplify the assembly and cable-testing work, the height of the connection
point is more than 700mm.

GMset Environment
Preserving the environment

The Schneider recycling procedure for SF6 The Schneider recycling procedure
based products is subject to rigorous
management, and allows each device to be
traced through to its final destruction.

Within the framework of the group’s environmental policy, Schneider services

has made an operational procedure available, enabling medium voltage switchgear
to be processed while eliminating any release of SF6 into the atmosphere.
To help you to protect the environment, and to take care of your storage or
dismantling concerns, Schneider services offers to recover any of your equipment
that is reaching the end of its service life.
The GMset has been designed with environmental protection in mind:
b the insulating and conducting materials that are used are identified, easy to
separate, and recyclable,
b SF6 can be recovered at the end of its life, and reused after treatment.
