THE BRAIN:

HEMISPHERES
INTRODUCTION TO COGNITIVE
SCIENCE
BRAIN is commonly defined as the portion of the
central nervous system. It is the primary center of
for the regulation and control of the body
activities, receiving and interpreting sensory
impulses, and transmitting information to the
muscles and organs.

BRAIN is basically dicided into two hemispheres

i.e the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere.
"LEFT-BRAINED" People vs RIGHT-
BRAINED People
LEFT BRAIN
HEMISPHERE
is more verbal, analytical, and orderly than right
brain.

Its better at things like reading, writing, and

computations.

Perform different functions and communicate

information with each other through a band of
nerve that connect them.

It controls the most of the movements and

function of the right side of the body.
According to sperrys dated research, the left
brain helps you with:
Logic

Sequencing

Linear thinking

Mathematics

Facts

Thinking words
How do I know of someone is
“left-brained”?
Left-brain characteristic include a gift for language, analytical skills and
mathematical concepts such as time and sequence. You may find that
individuals with this brain dominance are good with letters, numbers, and
words ( Sousa, 1995, p. 88). These individuals seem “to have a knack for.”
Language skills including reading, writing, and speaking
Math
Logic and reasoning
Science

It's the side of thinking that is very active in areas such as science,
mathematics, language and judgement.
How can educatos helps the
“left-brained” students?
To help “left-brained” students, provide in very logical sequences- for
example, make (numbered) list for them.

Another way to help the students with left-brain preference is to give

them typed or printed directions. Let these students do their work step
by step.
RIGHT BRAIN
HEMISPHERE

The right side of the brain is responsible for

image processing, spatial thinking, and
movement in the left side of the body

The right brain is more visual and intuitive.

People sometimes refer to it as the analog brain.
It has a more creative and less organized way
of thinking.
Sperry’s dated research suggests the right
brain helps people with:
imagination
holistic thinking
intuition
arts
rhythm
nonverbal cues
feelings visualization
daydreaming
How do I know of someone is
“right-brained”?
Right-brain characteristics include creativity, the ability to see patterns,
spartial awareness, and the understanding of how things relate to one
another in different contexts.
These individuals seem to "have a knack for":
"Out-of-the-box thinking"
Art, including the ability to draw, paint, sculpt, etc.
Imaginative thinking
Music, including the ablity to play instruments with ease or to
recognize a song melody and play it back upon "hearing it"
LATERALIZATION

When a certain cognitive function is processed in one of the hemispheres, as

opposed to the other, then that a cognitive function is lateralized.

Example of Lateralization :
- Left brain takes care of sensory-motor functions of right half of the body.
- Right brain takes care of of sensory-motor of left half of the body.

Does the left-handedness vs right-handedness correlate with 'right-brained'?

LANGUAGE
DETAILED VS HOLISTIC PROCESSING

The left hemisphere seems to process information

with an eye for detail.

The right hemisphere seems to process information

with an eye for bigger picture.
