OBJECTIVES FOR THIS SESSION

At the end of the viewing, you should be able to:


1. Describe the over-all school literacy program;
2. Differentiate between content area literacy and disciplinary literacy;
3. Describe how relevant Language Arts standards/competencies intersect and overlap
with content area practice;
4. Articulate the knowledge and skills teachers need to support students in developing
disciplinary literacy; and
5. Appreciate the complementary roles of Language Arts teachers and content area
teachers in developing students’ content and disciplinary literacy.

WORKSHOP
Write your answers to the questions in the spaces provided. You will share these answers at the
synchronous meeting for this session.

1. Compare and contrast content area literacy and disciplinary literacy through a Venn
Diagram.

2. “Every teacher is a reading teacher.” Agree or Disagree? Explain your answer.

I agree that every teacher should have the responsibility to teach students how to read
to be able to understand the lesson and appreciate learning.

3. Describe one specific way English and Science/Math teachers can collaborate to help all
students learn and be engaged with text:

In terms of your role as English/Math/Science teacher, what concern or problem do you


have or foresee in developing disciplinary literacy among your students? Why is it a problem?
Suggest one possible solution.
