Assignment -1 / Engineering Physics (OPTICS)

Last date of submission: 02.05.2022

Instructions:
i. All questions are compulsory.
ii. Handwritten answers is to be submitted. All the pages of the assignment must contain
student’s name and registration number.
iii. Submission after due date (02.05.2022) will not be accepted for grading.
iv. Your handwriting is not going to be assessed but it must be as clear as possible to
avoid any confusion during evaluation.
v. Answers should be to the point and supplemented with proper diagram wherever
necessary.
1. Monochromatic green light of wavelength 554 nm illuminates two parallel narrow
slits 7.7 μm apart. Calculate the angular position of the third-order (m=3) bright fringe
in radians.

2. In costume jewelry, rhinestones (made of glass with n =1.50) are often coated with
silicon monoxide (n = 2.0) to make them more reflective. How thick should the coating
be to achieve strong reflection for 560 nm light incident normally?

3. A material having an index of refraction of 1.30 is used as an antireflective coating

on a piece of glass of refractive index 1.5. Determine the minimum thickness of the
film needed to minimize reflection of 500nm light.

4. Find the angular width of the central bright maxima in the diffraction of single slit of
width 1.2 x10-4m, when the slit is illuminated with light of wavelength 6000Å.

5. Design a double slit system (i.e. find a:d ratio) in which the fourth fringe not counting
the central max is missing.
