CHAPTER 23 : WAVES OPTICS

QUESTIONS.

Thin film
1. Light from a sodium lamp with a wavelength of 598.3 nm is shone normally on a soap
film. If the film has an index of refraction n=1.40 and is suspended in the air, determine
the non-zero minimum thickness for which it appears dark in reflected light.

ANSWER

2. A thin film of acetone (n=1.25) coats a thick glass plate (n=1.50). white light is incident
normal to the film. In the reflections, fully destructive interference occurs at 600 nm and
fully constructive interference at 700 nm. Calculate the thickness of the acetone film.

ANSWER

3. Magnesium fluoride (n=1.38) is frequently used as a lens coating to make nonreflecting

lenses. Determine the difference in the minimum film thickness required to prevent
reflection of a blue light ( λ=400 nm ¿ and of a red light ( λ=700 nm ¿ .

4. The surface of a lens is coated with a film of magnesium fluoride which have refractive
index 1.38. the refractive index of the material of the lens is 1.67.
a. Calculate the three lowest values of the thickness of magnesium fluoride film,
that would result in destructive interference for reflected light of wavelength
450 nm.
b. If the thickness of the film is the second lowest value calculated in (a) above, for
what wavelength of the light reflected from the lens will constructive
interference occur?

5. A soup bubble appears green ( λ=540 nm ¿ at the point of its front surface nearest the
viewer. What is the smallest thickness a soup bubble film could have? Assume n=1.35.

ANSWER

6. Light is at normal incidence on thin soup of reflective index 1.3 and thickness of 0.15
μm . Calculate the wavelength of light that undergoes.
a. Constructive interference
b. Destructive interference
ANSWER

Single slit.
1. A slit has a width of a 1=2.3 x 10 m . When light with a wavelength of λ 1=510 nm
−6

passes through this slit, the width of the central bright fringe on an observation screen
has a certain value. With the screen kept in the same place, this slit is replaced with a
second slit (width a2, and a wavelength λ 2=740 nm is used. The width of the central
bright fringe on the screen is observed to be unchanged. Find a2.

2. Calculate
a. Light that has a wavelength of 668 nm passes through a slit 6.73 x 10-6 m wide
and falls on a screen that is 1.85 m away. What is the distance on the screen from
the center of the central bright to the third dart fringe on the other side?
b. The central bright fringe in a single-slit diffraction pattern has a width that
λ
equals the distance D between the screen and the slit. Find the ratio of the
a
wavelength λ of the light to the width a of the slit. (Assuming D>> a,

a. The angle at which the second order is observe
b. The number of maxima lines can be observed.

wavelength ( λ=500 nm ¿ falls on the slits from a distance source. How far apart will
adjacent bright interference fringes be on the screen?
