1. A speeding bus is travelling at a constant speed of 10 m s -1 on a straight road. It passes a stationary car
which immediately accelerates from rest with an acceleration of 2.5 m s -2. Calculate the time it takes for the
car to overtake the bus.
SUGGESTED ANSWER :
(c) The diagram shows a trolley accelerating on a straight runway from point A to point C.
i. Explain how you would measure the average speed of the trolley.
ii. The speed of the trolley is 4.21 m s-1 when it passes point C with an acceleration of 0.16 m s -2. If the
distance from B to C is 1.50 m, calculate the speed of the trolley when it passes point B.

6. (a) What is meant by projectile motion?
(b) A ball is thrown downward, at 30° below the horizontal from a stage of height 2.0 m. It reaches the floor
after 0.2 s.
i. Determine the initial speed of the ball.
ii. Calculate the distance of the ball from the stage.
iii. Calculate the velocity of the ball when it reaches the floor.
iv. If the ball is projected horizontally from the stage with the same speed, compare the speed of the
ball to reach the floor with that in (b)(iii).
