2.0 RATIONALE

Fish farming is still in its infancy meaning that the industry is not fully developed.
The commercial fish farmers are still very few, with most fish coming from the
natural waters. However, fish from the major natural water bodies is dwindling,
and in some cases depleted due to the bad methods of fishing employed by
small scale fishermen.

In Zambia fish provides the major source of protein in most households


especially for the low and middle income groups. In rural areas people can no
longer afford to buy fish with increasing market prices. Hence, there is an
increasing number of people that are going into fish farming in order to feed their
families and to earn income from the sale of fish.

When compared to agricultural production per area, there is higher profit in fish
farming with good management. Apart from that, fish farming can be practiced in
areas not suitable for crop and livestock production. Fish farming can also be
integrated with other farming activities such as irrigated crop and animal
production.

Small scale fish farmers are unable to produce enough fish for the market due to
lack of skill/knowledge in fish production. As fish becomes fewer in the capture
fisheries there is a need to develop commercial fish farming to meet the demand
for this important source of protein.

Therefore, the need for a curriculum development in fish farming for a skills
award course cannot be overemphasized and cannot come at a better time than
this when the prices of fish have become astronomical. It is imperative to produce
graduates with relevant skills and positive values and attitudes that meet both the
local and global context.

3.0 PROGRAMME PURPOSE

The purpose of the programme is to equip the trainee with knowledge, skills and
appropriate attitudes to carry out fish farming practices.

4.0 PROGRAMME OUTCOMES


On completion of the programme, the trainee will be able to;

5.0 COURSE DURATION


The duration of the programme is 200 hours or six weeks.

8.1 Formative evaluation

8.1.1 Purpose: To determine an on-going basis whether the programme


is being implemented as planned and to advise on improvements.

8.1.2 Major areas of Evaluations: Course Aims and Objectives,


student’s entry requirements, course contents, teaching, learning
activities, learning resources.

8.1.3 Evaluation Instruments: Questionnaires, structured interviews,


observations, checklist, examinations/test records, participation and
attendance in class.

8.1.4 Sources of Information: Students, trainees, administrative


monitors and records.

8.2.1 Major areas of evaluation - Course aims, trainees’ entry


requirements, course content, learning resources, teaching/learning
activities, trainers, assessors, examiners and graduates’
performance in employment.

9.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:


9.1 Direct Entry: Grade Nine School Certificate

9.2 Mature Age Entry


Two years working experience in fish farming and other related fields.

10.0 ASSESSMENT
Trainees shall be assessed by respective institutions according to the TEVETA
Skills Award Assessment Guidelines

10.1 Final Assessment 100%

10.2 Pass Mark 70%

11.0 ATTENDANCE

The candidates must have an attendance of minimum 85% to be eligible for the
final examinations

1.0 PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS


12.1 A candidate should pass all the modules to be awarded the skills
certificate.

12.2 A candidate failing in any modules shall be required to repeat and pass
the failed modules before being awarded with the certificate.

13.0 STAFF QUALIFICATION

13.1 Minimum of Certificate in Fish Farming


13.2 Minimum of two years relevant work experience
13.3 Teaching qualification from an accredited and registered institution
13.4 Accredited Trainer by TEVETA

14.0 CERTIFICATION
Successful trainees will be awarded a Skills Award Certificate in Fish Farming by
the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority.
