History of Junaid Jamshed

The main idea behind launching J. (J dot) was to reintroduce traditional clothes in Pakistan
with a blend of modernism. For this purpose, they initiated with reworking on their Eastern
dresses, especially Qameez Shalwar and made them contemporary with the latest elaborations
available.

J. was established in 2002 with a unique philosophy to revive the country's cultural heritage
and make Shalwar Kameez; the popular wear, and soon became one of the most famous and
recognizable clothing brands in South East Asia.

It all started with an outlet at Tariq Road in 2002. Initially, only men's wear was available at
the store, but later clothing for women, children, teens, as well as formal wear including
groom's wear was also added to the product list as expansion continued. In 2011, they took
another bold initiative and gave a new look to all their outlets. This broke the monotonous
theme of their outlets by making them more modern and different from others.

It expanded its store network to 100+ outlets nationwide. J. has further expanded globally by
opening 20 outlets in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UAE, Qatar, to name a few.

In a short timespan of 5 years, Junaid Jamshed has built a name and goodwill in the market as
a fashion designer wear outlet for men and women with a unique range of products.

Junaid Jamshed was awarded BRAND OF THE YEAR in 2007.

Components of IT deals with collecting and organizing data and information. The
components that are being used by Junaid Jamshed are listed below:

Hardware
Point of sales (POS):
A point-of-sale system (POS) is combination of hardware and software that allows Junaid
Jamshed’s retail store employees to take transactions and simplify day to day business
operations efficiently and effectively. Hardware that is used by Junaid Jamshed includes:

 Bar-Code scanners: A cashier can easily scan barcodes to checkout customer in a

time efficient manner and to get information about a specific product within seconds.
 Receipt printer (Black copper): They are used to print credit card slips and
customer receipts. Customers can use these receipts to keep a record or if they choose
to return/change a product, the receipt is required.
 POS payment
terminal: A system
that is used for
processing Credit
/Debit card
payments. It reads
information from the
customers bank card
and checks whether
the Customers bank

Anti-theft AM systems:
They are used at outlets for the purpose of security and to prevent products form of stealing.

Hardware used in IT department:

Junaid Jamshed’s IT department is using different kinds of hardware for their organization in-
order to perform their work efficiently and effectively. These hardware are listed below:

 Computer systems include a monitor screen, CPU, mouse, keyboard, computer data
storage etc.
 Microphones and headsets to interact between Junaid Jamshed’s various outlets.
 Printers are used for the purpose of printing bills and receipts.
 Fax machines are used for the purpose of sending and receiving documents.
 Routers are used for establishing an internet connection.
 Secondary storage devices are also used to backup important data.

Software
Software that are used by Junaid Jamshed brand are:

 Microsoft 365: It is used for their office and work each application of Microsoft 365
offers different services to Junaid Jamshed. MS word is used to create documents, MS
PowerPoint is used for presentations, MS excel is used for data and statistics entry
that is stored in their databases, MS outlook is used for managing E-mails and
calendars.
 Shopify: It is a POS system that allows Junaid Jamshed to accept payments from
customers and keep track of sales. This system is used for their in-store and online
sales.
 Zoom: This software is being used as a medium of communication during this
pandemic. It is also used for Co-ordinating with domestic and international outlets.
 MySQL: It is an open-source relational database system. Programming languages
includes C++ and C.

Database
Junaid Jamshed is using MySQL as a database management software. It is the most robust
transactional database engine available on the market which is compatible with virtually
every operating system and is an industry standard. MySQL is very easy to install, and thanks
to a bevy of third-party tools that can be added to the database, setting up an implementation

8
Role of IT In J.

is a relatively simple task. In addition, it is also an easy database to work with. It is also
significantly less expensive than most other database software. They are using MySQL
because it reduces data inconsistencies which results in faster decision making, it also ensures
data security and consistency because of reduced updating errors and updated security
patches. Although MySQL is very easy to access and simple to use, it does have a few
drawbacks. Not surprisingly, MySQL is not designed to do everything. The database is not
fully SQL-compliant and tends to be limited in areas including data warehousing, fault
tolerance, and performance diagnostics. MySQL also tends to have less out-of-the-box
functionality than many other database systems on the market. Certain features are dependent
not on the core engine but on applications and add-ons. MySQL is also suffering from slow
development as compared to other database software because the developers do not accept
community-developed patches.

Network
Junaid Jamshed uses a combination of Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network
(WAN) to intercommunicate between local outlets and outlets abroad as well as providing
means of communication to its customer base. To fulfill this different combination of
different networks, Junaid Jamshed uses the state-of-the-art network, ‘Nayatel’ because of its
speed and reliability. Nayatel is a telecommunication company that offers special network
services to corporate firms. They offer packages with internet speeds as high as 40Mbps
which Junaid Jamshed is using in most of their outlets.

Types of Information Systems

There are 5 types of Information Systems being used in the organization. Those are:

 Decision Support Systems: It is an information system that supports business or

organizational decision-making activities. DSSs serves the management, operations
and planning levels of an organization and helps people make decisions about
problems that may be rapidly changing. Typical information that is stored in the
decision support application includes inventories of information assets, comparative
sales figures, projected revenue figures.
 Management Information Systems: It is an information system used for decision-
making, and for the coordination, control, analysis, and visualization of information in
an organization. The goal of a management information system is to increase the
value and profits of the business. The MIS analyzes the input with routine algorithms

and summarizes the results to produce reports that managers use to monitor, control,
and predict future performance. MIS systems provides the information needed to
make the structured decisions based on the experience of the tactical managers.
 Transaction Processing Systems: It is a way of computing that divides work into
individual, indivisible operations, called transactions. They are used to record day to
day transactions of Junaid Jamshed. Examples of transaction processing systems
include;
1. Point of Sale System
2. Records daily sales
3. Payroll systems: processing employees’ salary, loans management, etc.
4. Stock Control Systems: keeping track of inventory levels
 Database Management Systems: It is a software package designed to define,
manipulate, retrieve, and manage data in a database. It generally manipulates the data
itself. In large systems, a DBMS helps users and other third-party software to store
and retrieve data. The DBMS provides a centralized view of data that can be accessed
by multiple users, from multiple locations, in a controlled manner to Junaid Jamshed.

Problems faced by current staff

“There are a lot of problems that are being faced by the employees around the world because
of this pandemic”

Employees around the world are facing exceptional challenges as there is lack of access to
health care. Job losses are set to exceed 25 million worldwide. Social distancing is crucial
and so everyone is in a safer environment for themselves and others. However, a majority of
the world’s workers have little choice but to continue with their jobs even if they are unwell.
J. as an organization also faced an extremely difficult time during the early days of the
Coronavirus pandemic as quoted in one interview of Mr. Sohail Hamid Khan with ARY
News where he highlighted the importance of allowing ecommerce, specifically in Pakistan.
There are:

1. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to follow which are instructions according to a

routine operation. Safety of employees is at risk.
2. Internet connectivity issues are arising in some areas and outlets. This may lead to
delay in processing ecommerce orders and disturbance in customer service feedback
and communication.
3. Sometimes a glitch may occur which may deteriorate the systems and the whole
process must be restarted. A glitch may produce invalid inventory number or an
invalid price.

15
Role of IT In J.

4. Companies were not prepared for Covid-19, so workload has increased as it was an
unexpected turn of events. Most of their processes are shifted to online e-commerce
increasing workload on their staff. The workload is further increased during special
promotional sales due to limited employees and huge number of customers.
5. Job security is at risk because of downsizing during the recent events. This plays a
role in demotivating staff which reduces efficiency within the organization.

Recommendations regarding current systems

In this pandemic situation, efficiency and quality output is required by Junaid Jamshed.
However, by following SOPs, they can achieve the uniformity of performance too. With
current hardware components, there is more load on systems which can be solved by
increasing the number of hardware components in the organization. The workload often
becomes too much for current computer systems to bear and this becomes a huge problem for
both the employees and the customers which can result in customer dissatisfaction. It would
be recommended to use up to date technology in all outlets to avoid such inconveniences and
maintain their brand reputation. Another recommendation could be to use modern inventory
control software which includes using QR codes to get details of a product without the use of
tag systems. A customer may know the details about the product using their mobile phones,
using a QR code system which will enable customers to have the ease of getting product
details efficiently by using their mobile phones while also reducing paper usage which can be
promoted as part of ethical business procedures. Junaid Jamshed should also expand their
ecommerce business more by focusing on social media and advertisement online. They can
also create a more personalized experience on their website which would have an impactful
touch on the customers.

As Junaid Jamshed is a multinational brand that offers eastern wear, perfumes, footwear and
accessories for women and men of all ages, they should focus on market penetration and
increase their promotional efforts. Another strategy that could be used is market development
in which they can avail the opportunity of entering new markets like London, Dubai, Abu
Dhabi etc. It is a well-known brand and so they can also increase the range of their market
offerings.

16
Role of IT In J.

Customer satisfaction is a key point in the growth and success of an organization. They
should focus more on customer feedback through their representatives. Responding to
customer queries/complaints is a part of customer satisfaction and it needs to be engaged with
more importance. They could also improve their connection with their customers by
becoming more active on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram where
customers can contact their representatives directly and provide real time feedback.

“Customer is king” philosophy should be used to deal with all customers to maximize
customer value so that customers can provide value back to the company.

Conclusion
Junaid Jamshed is one of the leading textile industries in Pakistan and is known worldwide
for their traditional clothing wear. It was established in 2002 in the city Karachi and is well
known because it is branded after the celebrity, ‘Junaid Jamshed’. They have a global reach
of 100+ outlets nationwide and recently opened 20+ outlets in the UK, Australia, Canada,
New Zealand, UAE, Qatar, to name a few. Junaid Jamshed aims to expand in various cities
nationally and internationally as well as diversify its product range in line with market trends
to become a complete fashion stop.

Facing difficult situations may prove to be challenging at times such as now, however
embracing them positively and accepting that it is a part of life was Junaid Jamshed’s
persona.

Junaid Jamshed has various IT Components which help them operate effectively and
efficiently. Although the brand has a hold on good quality fabric, it has lately showed
fondness for a multicolored outfit which is not always aesthetically pleasing to many
audiences. Despite all this, J. is expanding quietly and much more impressively than its
competitors even when many expected a downfall after the death of the Pakistani celebrity,
Junaid Jamshed after whom the organization is named.

Information Technology has brought a revolutionary change in the business industry. For
example, effective communication even during hard times, globalization boundaries and the
cultural gap has been reduced by implementing information systems. It has given companies
the ability to develop and use computerized systems to track and record financial
transactions. IT Networks have shortened the time and hard work for employees which helps
achieve greater efficiencies and allows businesses to make better decisions by assessing

market trends and achieving a competitive advantages over other brands. Junaid Jamshed has
been using up to date IT technology which has helped the company reach closer to its goal of
global reach. It is pretty apparent just how many benefits recent technology improvements
give to a business such as Junaid Jamshed and using them to their advantage helps the
business run even more smoothly.

There are no limits to how successful you can be when you have all the right pieces in the
right place.
