DESIGNING WORK ORGANIZATION: A DIAGNOSTIC
STUDY OF “INTERTEK INDIA PVT. LTD.”

Scope

Understanding the design, culture and long- term plans of the Organization, analyze the inherent working style, people agenda, structure,
leadership vision, revenue model and its preparedness to achieve the desired goals. Draw inferences from real time business scenarios
and come up with suggestive recommendations.

About The Organization

Intertek India Pvt. Ltd. is the Indian arm of Intertek Global Plc, an assurance, inspection, product testing and certification company
headquartered in London, England. In India, its headquartered in New Delhi with 2400 employees across 20 offices & labs.
Founded by none other than the great physicist and Nobel prize winner Albert Einstein. Innovation runs in the DNA of Organization,
which has made it one of the global pioneers, providing world class expertise in quality and safety solutions to help validate products,
processes and operations for manufacturers, retailers, government bodies across the industries.
Today’s Intertek has evolved after series of mergers, cross border acquisitions and partnerships which gives rise to its existing mixed
culture inherited from different backgrounds.
Intertek has a typical vertical organizational structure and carries a legacy of following top-down approach. In its journey of evolution, it
aims to become a matrix and flexi working environment however the multi-industry business model poses unique challenges that it needs
to fix for a sustainable growth.
Contingency Factors

• Intertek business of Assurance,Testing, Inspection & Certification depends on supply chain and manufacturing across eleven major
industries like retail, food, oil & gas, pharma, electrical & electronics etc.
• Post pandemic challenges of supply chain has hit the business and revenues globally, however India as a market has still given
consistent 10-15% growth
• Top leadership though promotes employee friendliness but on ground has a one-way command working approach, which puts
immense pressure on employees and has given rise to strong negative grapevines and disengagement among employees
• Competition has sensed these undercurrents due to which loyal and high performing employees are being easily poached causing
severe business losses
• Country leadership has recently undergone change and comes with similar approach like top management which poses a potential
threat for Intertek to sustain its position of key player in the market.

Recommendation

• Define a new hybrid structure fitting in to the business model, that is executed in phased manner along with change interventions to
bring in gradual evolution of mindset and leadership behaviors
• Introduce leadership development plans – first time managers, transformation from mid management to strategic role and leadership
for VUCA world
• Mentorship and coaching to all leaders and people managers to bring back the same passion, commitment and loyalty among
employees
• Create organization communication channel which is two way where leadership gets ideas and feedback from all employees and
proactively communicates updates and future plans.
