Implications of atomic structure on breakthrough discoveries

Instructions:
1. Discuss the pros and cons of this kind research and write them in a comparative chart in your
science notebook.
2. Answer the following questions in a separate file ( Word document will be preferable)
* What was the Manhattan project?
* How come the research based on atomic theory was a crucial point to take into account in world war
II?
* Explain how science is applied to serve certain purposes, and whether scientific discoveries were
crucial to win the war or not
* What are the ethical implications of the atomic bomb research? How to determine in which cases
science is beyond human rights?
3. You may explore other articles writing in the browser the following: "advances in the development
of atomic energy"
this will open show plenty of sources you can read as an extra information to progress in your task I
suggest only the first 6. Choose one!!
Please upload your file correctly named and titled to the task max. on Wednesday May 15th / 2019
8:00 p.m.. Works uploaded after will be not considered for marking.

Pros:

- It employed around 130,000 workers around the country

- The development of atomic research
- The development of engineering and technology
- World War 2 stopped
- Atomic age arrival
- Shortened the time of war
- Prevented the opportunity of the war to continue which means that prevented deaths of others
- New ways of energy resources were discovered

Cons:
- Killed many innocent people
- Left the lands infected and now all vegetation that goes on there is prohibited to eat
- After effects that happen from the bomb in the land and in the people
- Gave the opportunity of other countries and terrorist to create them and cause the deaths of
many others
- Killed over 210,000 people in various cities in japan
- Cold war arrival
- They instructed both Hiroshima and Nahasten
- Worlds tension got larger

What was the Manhattan Project?

The manhattan project was when the United States had a program during the World War ll, which
function was to develop the first atomic bomb, that were detonated in two different Japanese cities
called; Hashirama and Nagasaki, this occurred in august 1945 and left around 210,000 deaths. The
manhattan Project was not based in manhattan, its called like this because it was its codename, this
project was actually held in Los Alamos, New Mexico

How come the research based on atomic theory was a crucial point to take into account in
world war II?
This research of atomic theory was crucial for the Manhattan Project because workers and scientist
that worked on it, had to use different elements such as Uranium and other components that are
made up of atoms which is all the atomic theory is about. So the atomic theory were the only studies
at that time about atoms and how they work; so they used the principals (which is atomic theories) to
implement the atoms and create bondings, ect..

Explain how science is applied to serve certain purposes, and whether scientific discoveries
were crucial to win the war or not
Science is applied in many ways to win the War, since basically the United States and all its allies,
won and they were the ones that used the nuclear weapons the most and the ones that started it. So
science dd have a huge impact on who won and how had more power because back then the most
power was shown by who had a weapon destroyed the most that could defeat the enemy (which was
in this case United States and this was shown by the Manhattan project).

What are the ethical implications of the atomic bomb research? How to determine in which
cases science is beyond human rights?
Atomic research I think it's really good because it can help create new things, new components, or
elements that could end up being the cure of a disease, but m not so much in favor of atomic bomb
research, I mean it's good to do the research but not to actually test them or detonate it because it
ends many incense lifes and where the bomb lands it would make a huge impact on the place/earth
because people wouldn't be able to cultivate food or drink water from those lands since it would be
poisoned for more than thousands of years.
