Preface

In the story "Judgement," a young woman with a good education is denied employment
because of where she lives. It also describes the difficulties faced by young people living in
poor neighborhoods. When Jada loses hope and runs into tragedy, the narrative comes to a
close. The answer, though, didn't come up for a while. The story was written by the
researcher with the intention of making a few crucial points. The first goal is to inform the
target audience that young adults with college degrees who live in impoverished areas are
truly unemployed in our society. The second goal is to explain the impact, both positive and
bad, that unemployment has on educated young people. Finally, it inspires adolescents who
could be in a like circumstance to endure. College graduates or students in their final year
of postsecondary study are the designated target group. Taking into account that each of
these pupils comes from a different community, whether wealthy or underdeveloped. Since
the majority of professional administrations are guilty of rejecting qualified individuals
according to where they Live, it is the responsibility of all students to be informed of the
issue. The "Judgement" reflecting piece will be spoken before an audience, possibly at a
college fair or even as part of a graduation activity. The researcher picked this approach for
a variety of reasons, including the fact that it conveys information both verbally and
nonverbally and makes use of both visual and auditory cues. In addition, it would be more
fascinating than reading from printed materials or merely giving a speech. Additionally, it
encourages, educates, and enlightens the audience. To improve the presentation and the
message being delivered, a range of technological tools will be used. These include a
laptop, a projector, and a screen to accommodate the audience's visual preferences.
Additionally, a microphone will be used to amplify and project the speaker's voice for added
volume and clarity. The researcher anticipates that the narrative will not only be entertaining,
but also informative and encouraging to its audience.
Jada staggered over to the dining room table. She appeared to have been up all night
attempting to study despite the loud music and honking horns and brightcar lights. Mornin
maw," she said plainly with a hint of cliche. "Is wah going on wit you today? Meen tell you
go in yuh bed early . Studying is good for you I admit but overdoing it not good fi yuh
nerves." Only god knows  Mummy, exam time approaching an i cant get fuh study with all
the noise out de. "God tek it easy on meh baby ." Jada was always an A student, constantly
being at the top of her class Ever since she could remember, her mother was always her
breadwinner. "Mommy i gone" jada shouted as she rushed out of their home . It was her last
day of CSEC and she had high hope and dreams. Thank you so much, ma'am. With
conflicting emotions, Jada ended the call. She was rejected once more at her fourth
interview for a job. She kept getting the same replies."Ms. James. You do have the
qualifications we are looking for, but you are just not suitable for this job," There was never
oncea reason for such response. "Mawwwwwww," Jada shouted, her eyes filled with tears.
"I tired of these damn people telling me one thing ov and ova."9 a dem distinction thing yuh
get" Her mother exclaimed."Afta me sacrifice all i gat to send you to school. Mek dem teach
yuh fi write properly and talk pretty, now no work dem aint want give yuh.." Jada shook her
head and moaned. She had no idea that because of where she lived, she was being
overlooked. As time went on, that glimmer of optimism for Jada Once dimmed. She felt bad
about disappointing her mother, but she didn't feel like she had a choice. One evening, she
made the decision to go for a walk while the sun was setting. Since she had isolated herself
in her room for the entire day She was entranced by her own thoughts as she walked. She
observed an odd car approaching in her direction. Then she started to accelerate. had a
variety of ideas running through her mind. The vehicle accelerated to keep up with
her .What was a nice car like this  doing in this part of town anyways? "Good evening Sir,
May I help you?" Jada asked in a quiet voice.”U know i been eyeing yuh fah a long time . A
from yuh a likkle pikneya go a school mi a pree yuh enuh babes. Jada was appalled. She
was disgusted even by the grating tone in his voice, not to mention the ugly lump pm his
cheek and the huge scar that stretches across his cheek.*What yuh really talking about big
man and whos you ? Jada managed to inquire. A me dem call Tragedy enuh babez. A mi a
di Don fi di area... an da area deh to." He uttered with a creepy laugh, nodding his head in
indication that he was referring to below her waist. "I hear bout yuh like issue you can come
work fah me " Jada stood there in shock, unaware of the bewildered expression on her face.
What kinda business?" She asked.Yah gah sell on and two thing and could hold on pon
most of the profit. In other words, yuh get fi be me sales gyal or accountant wa wva big
word yall affi use.. an sometime, yuh might afi leave di country." He encouraged with a wink.
Roneika was completely ignorant to the fact that she was about to sign a deal with the
devil."Roneika! Ron! But a wah do da buh- waahpn to da gal yah man?!" Tragedy uttered
annoyance.Jada  was on the phone setting up a another employment interview. She had no
intention in continuing Tragedy's job of selling drugs for him. Not for what she had toiled,
studied, and hoped. Most importantly, her mother did not want this. Roneika eventually
arrived at Marlin & Watkins Accounting on a chilly Monday mornin Firm. She felt a little
weak in the knees and her heart was pounding through her ears. "Right this way Ms.
James. You may take a seat." Thank you Sir." Now... you have a very impressive resume."
Mr. Smith stated with a concerned look."But i-if Only... y you lived... somewhere.. else. The
thing is.. We can't really trust people like you. just to avoid problems in our company.Jada
just sat there, with the tears rolling down her cheeks. She did not expect this. She was
determined to fulfill her dreams and aspirations. She knew she was better than that and she
had what it took to become a great accountant. She kept trying hearing the same
responses" she knew it had nothing to do with her qualifications. she had no choice she just
continued to do trgedy's work

The reflective piece "Judgement" recounts the challenging experiences of an educated

young lady who is denied a job because of her place of residence. The writer deftly employs
a combination of registers, dialectal variations and communicative behaviours and attitudes
to language. It also illustrates how education and socialization can affect a person's
linguistic Behaviour. However, for this exercise., only two will be discussed: namely,
dialectal variations and language registers.Dialectal ariation, tefers to changes in language
due to various influences. These inciude, social geographic, individual and group factors.
We can further isolate and distinguished between Dialect (the variety of language
characteristic of a particular group of people in a given speech community, country or
region), Creole (refers to a dialect or language which results from contact between the
language of a colonizing people and the language of a color people) and Patois (refers to a
geographical dialect which differs from the standard language spoken in a given
country). There are different variations of dialect portrayed within the Retlective piece. Firstly
there isAcrolect (which is purely Standard English), portrayed clearly when she answered
the phone saying "Hello, Ms. James speaking. How may I help you?" Next in line comes
Mesoleet (which is Sub-Standard English or a combination of Standard English and
CreolePatois).brought to life in the 5 line of the piece where jada's mother mentioned
"Studying is good for you l admit but overdoing it not good fi yuh nerves." And last but not
least theres Basilect (which is complete Patois/Creole) with a perfect example coming out in
Roneika's conversation with her mother where she said Mummy..Mi tired a di same damn
ting ova an ova enuh.Language registers is a variety of a language used for a particular
purpose or in a particular social setting. It possess various levels of formality, The five levels
identified have been given specialized names by Linguists; frozen, formal, consultative,
casual and intimate. Examples of registers found in the reflective piece are : Intimate
register found in the early parts of the reflective when the subject was conversing with her
mother, for example, when she said "Mornin Mumz" usinga basic slang for the word Mother
and effectively portraying the intimae register. There was also formal register being
portrayed as a result of the subject's interaction with the interviewer, for example where the
interviewer said "Right this way Ms. James. You may take a seat., to which she replied,
"Thank you Sir." This showedmutual understanding and level of education. Private register
was also evident at the point when the Mercedes was allegedly trailing her and she
discussed within herself"What was a Benz in this part of town?"
