The
1992 
Cougar 
XR7

This was essentially a carryover year for the Cougar, with nothing much changed. Still standard
was the 3.8 V6 (LS model), and the 5.0 V8 was optional in the LS and standard in the XR7. The
fuel tank capacity was reduced by 1 gallon.
 
 

The 1992 XR7 received new 16" finned wheels. 

Trivia buffs take note: This was the ONLY model year that
this particular 16" wheel was offered, and only on the
Cougar XR7, making them extremely rare to find. 

Also, in addition to Black, Oxford White, and Electric Red, the XR7 received two unique new
monochromatic colors: Silver and Mocha Frost. Both are considered very rare due to the limited
production of XR7's and late availability of those colors. On the inside, the XR7 received the
same woodgrain trim as the LS model.
 
 
It was announced in late 1991 that a 25th Anniversary Cougar model
would indeed be produced. As a departure from the Medium Cabernet
Red color on the 
20th Anniversary model offered in 1987, this new car would be painted 
Tourmaline Green. The color was initially met with some concern;
however, 
green was beginning to be a popular color in the early 1990's, and this
was a 
golden (no pun intended) opportunity to make the Cougar a hip
attraction.
Once again, total production of 25th Anniversary Cougars was an even
5,000 cars.

adorned the C-pillars.

As with the1987models, the interior was tan Ultrasuede Unique 16" spoke BBS wheels with
(partial leather, partial suede) with contrasting green  hexagonal center caps 
carpeting and seat piping. The floor mats were  were fitted to the new 
embroidered with the new 25th Anniversary emblem.  25th Anniversary cat.

 
 The same trunklid nomenclature
used on the 20th was used on
the 25th, and they were
mounted on the trunklid, instead
of on the taillights, as with other
1992 Cougars. Of particular
interest were the keys for this
car----they also featured the 25th
logo, were highly difficult to
obtain through Ford dealers,
and are considered one of the
rarest pieces to find in a
later-model Cougar
(1983-1997).

The quality of features continued to be impressive; however, sales were not. Ford was very
cautious in their plans for the Cougar in the next few model years. Unbeknown to most, the 2-
door sport coupe market was rapidly shrinking due to the sales of sport utility vehicles, and Ford
was quick to notice this. Steps would be taken to cut costs on the Cougar, starting with the 1993
model year. And, a major refreshening of the car was on the way for 1994.
