MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

Chapter 1 MATHEMATICS IN NATURE

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the chapter, the students would be able to:
Multiply and determine the product of numbers using
different patterns
Appreciate and understand the beauty of patterns and
apply them into calculations
Solve for the unknown variables of two equations under
systems of linear equation using an alternative pattern.
PATTERNS AND NUMBERS
▪Numbers are items that describe positions or magnitudes.
▪Patterns are repeated forms of designs.
▪Patterns can be produced by applying some
measurement with the aid of numbers.
▪For example, a dressmaker to produce number of dresses
with speed and uniformity needs to create first, a pattern.
FIGURES AND PATTERNS
Figures/ patterns can be formed when multiplying two
numbers having equal number of digits.
▪Chalice
▪Diamond
▪Christmas tree
FIRST ROW

(vertical)
SECOND ROW

diagonal (left to right)

1st digit x 2nd digit
2nd digit x 3rd digit …
THIRD ROW

Diagonal (rt. To lft)

2nd digit x 1st digit
3rd digit x 2nd digit…
FOURTH ROW

Diagonal ( left to right)

1st digit x 3rd digit
2nd digit x 4th digit…
FIFTH ROW

Diagonal (rt to left)

3rd digit x 1st digit
4th digit x 2nd digit
5th digit x 3rd digit
SIXTH ROW

Diagonal (left to rt)

1st digit x 4th digit
2nd digit x 5th digit
SEVENTH ROW

Diagonal (left to rt)

4th digit x 1st digit
5th digit x 2nd digit
EIGHTH ROW

Diagonal (left to rt)

1st digit x 5th digit
NINTH ROW

Diagonal (rt to left)

5th digit x 1st digit
TENTH/ELEVENTH ROW
TWELFTH ROW

DIAMOND PATTERN

Start forming the figure at the middle going

downwards, leaving 1 column free for every row
1st digit x 1st digit
2nd digit x 1st digit
3rd digit x 1st digit
4th digit x 1st digit
5th digit x 1st digit
DIAMOND PATTERN

Starting above the 1st digit x 1st digit, going

downwards: 2nd digit x 1st digit
Beside 1st digit x 1st digit: 2nd digit x 2nd digit
Beside 2nd digit x 3rd digit
2nd digit x 4th digit
2nd digit x 5th digit
DIAMOND PATTERN

Starting above the 2nd digit x 1st digit , going

downwards: 3rd digit x 1st digit
3rd digit x 2nd digit
3rd digit x 3rd digit
3rd digit x 4th digit
3rd digit x 5th digit
DIAMOND PATTERN

Starting above the 3rd digit x 1st digit , going

downwards: 4th digit x 1st digit
4th digit x 2nd digit
4th digit x 3rd digit

4th digit x 4th digit

4th digit x 5th digit
DIAMOND PATTERN
Starting above the 4th digit x 1st digit , going
downwards: 5th digit x 1st digit
5th digit x 2nd digit
