A. Introduction
DANGER!
To ensure maximum safety, technicians and operators must read the section B. Safety
precautions, before starting installation, maintenance and adjustment of the equipment
or operation.

A.1. Goal of this manual


The purpose of this document is to describe the equipment delivered by Sécheron SA.
These operating instructions do not contain information about all product types and cannot cover
every conceivable installation, operation and maintenance condition.
The pictures and colors used to illustrate this description are not contractual.

For further information, or specific questions that are not dealt with in this document, please
contact your local Sécheron representative.

the same section.

B.1. Hazard information
Hazard information in this document have the following meaning:
DANGER!
Immediate danger to life!
Failure to observe this information will result in death or serious personal injury!

B.2. Danger
Safety recommendations complementary to the customer’s regulations.

DANGER!
High voltage electricity can kill or cause serious injury.
All work carried out on the equipment must be performed with power off and with the
equipment secured.
Never touch the high voltage parts before the high voltage circuit is disconnected and the
earthing protection is installed.
Modifying, removing, deactivating or otherwise changing components in any way may
affect the safety of the device.
Not using parts from the original manufacturer can affect the performance and safety of
the device and automatically waives the warranty provided by Sécheron.
Equipment that appears damaged or defective should be disconnected or made
inoperative and secured against unintended operation until it can be repaired by qualified
personal.
Comply with the applicable local regulations.

B.3. Personnel requirements


WARNING!
If safety precautions are not followed, there is a risk of personal injury.

The personnel operating the equipment is responsible for the safety and the work carried out.
Technicians and operators are responsible for:
• The equipment and the working area around the device.
• The personnel in the equipment area and working area.
• Ensuring that the safety test is fully completed before the high voltage circuit is connected.
Installation, operation and maintenance must be performed by skilled and instructed technicians
only. Technicians and operators should be certified according to local regulations and
requirements.
A skilled person is:
• An individual with technical knowledge or sufficient experience to enable that individual to
avoid hazards associated with electricity and extended to the hazards presented by the
mechanical devices and chemicals used.
An instructed person is:
• An individual adequately advised or supervised by a skilled person to enable that individual
to avoid hazards associated with electricity and extended to the hazards presented by the
mechanical devices and chemicals used.

B.4. The two-person rule of working


The purpose of this rule is to limit the consequences of accidents or sudden illness.
DANGER!
As a general rule, staff must not work alone where a significant hazard exists. A second
person who can provide appropriate assistance in the event of an emergency must be
available.

B.5. Voltage levels


DANGER!
The voltage levels of the auxiliary and control circuits can also represent a potential
danger.
Apply safety measures!

Refer to the specific electric diagrams of the equipment to determine the applied voltage.

D. Delivery and storage


D.1. Delivery status
In workshop, the equipment is subject to a control to ensure that their construction is compliant
and that it is ready for operation.
The equipment is delivered by unit or in small groups of panels.
The material that relates to the different busbar, the installation equipment and the operating
accessories are generally packed separately.

D.2. Packaging
The packaging is defined according to the delivery conditions.
• Equipment without packing.
• Equipment with simple packing.
• Equipment with packing for maritime transport or equivalent.
–– Desiccant bags supplied for transport.
–– Packed in a sealed polyethylene film or in aluminium.
IMPORTANT!
Do not open the cases if you do not intend to proceed immediately with installation on the
final site! The packaging protect the equipment!

D.3. Transport
DANGER!
Apply safety precautions during transport of equipment!
Cases must be moved with specific lifting machines.

D.4. Taking delivery of goods


On receipt of the delivery, check all items for damage and verify with the delivery note that the
delivery is complete.
In the event that damages are stated at the time of the delivery, the consignee shall immediately
notify them on the delivery note remitted by the forwarder and then inform the supplier, should the
consignee has a doubt about any not visible damages, the supplier highly recommend that such
statement is also indicated on the delivery note and the supplier informed. Passed a contractual
delay of seven (7) days after the date of receipt of the material, the forwarder nor the supplier can
not in any circumstances be hold as responsible for any eventual damages.

D.5. Storage
D.5.1. Storage conditions (IEC 61992-1, Appendix B - 2001)
• Ambient temperature during transport and storage: between -25 °C and +55 °C (-13 °F and
131 °F).
• Maximum daily average ambient temperature: +35 °C (95 °F).
• Absolute maximum ambient temperature: +40 °C (104 °F).
• Minimum ambient temperature during operation: -5 °C (23 °F).
• Indoors, air shall be clean and its relative humidity shall be not more than 50% RH at the
maximum temperature of +40 °C (104 °F). Relative humidity may be higher if the temperatures
are lower, for example, 90% RH at +20 °C (68 °F).
• The warehouse must be closed, securized and with a regulated ventilation (temperature /
humidity).

D.5.2. Short term storage (few days)


ff EQUIPMENT WITHOUT PACKING
• Do not dirty the room with corrosive or combustible gases, with dust, smoke, steam or salt.
• Prevent rodent damages on cables and inside the cubicles.
• Cover the equipment with a protection film.
• Ensure a sufficient ventilation.

ff EQUIPMENT WITH SIMPLE PACKING


• Do not dirty the room with corrosive or combustible gases, with dust, smoke, steam or salt.
• Prevent rodent damages on cables and inside the cubicles.
• Partially open the packing to ensure a minimum ventilation.

ff EQUIPMENT WITH PACKING FOR MARITIME TRANSPORT OR EQUIVALENT


• Store the equipment in a covered place that is dry and sheltered from the wind.
• Protect the cases against dirt, water and other possible damages.

• Prevent any dust accumulation in the warehouse.
• The cleaning interval should be defined depending on the pollution degree.
• Prevent rodent damages on cables and inside the cubicles.
• Check for any humidity or condensation mark inside and outside of the cubicles.
• Allow to Sécheron SA or to his representative to get to the storage place for regular inspections.
• Carry out frequent visual controls (at least every 15 days). If damages are detected, Sécheron
SA has to be informed immediately and pictures must be sent in order to estimate the damages.
• Any cubicle or equipment has to be connected to the auxiliary power supply in order to test
regularly the equipment, which includes:
–– Switching on of the control and protection relay SEPCOS.
–– Opening and closing of the circuit breaker.
–– Opening and closing of the disconnector switch.
IMPORTANT!
All the cubicles must be connected to 230 VAC in order to supply the material with
permanent heating. If the equipment does not include heating, use auxiliary heaters to
maintain a dry air!

ff EQUIPMENT WITH PACKING FOR MARITIME TRANSPORT OR EQUIVALENT


• The original maritime packing provides a 1-year guarantee.
• Raise the cases (e.g. using wooden blocks) in order to protect them against flooding and
water infiltrations.
Because of the maritime vacuum-packing, the opening of the packaging for inspection has to be
required to Sécheron SA. Opening could not be done without Sécheron’s authorization.

F.1. General requirements
F.1.1. Generalities

Apply safety precautions!
Installation works must be carried out only by personal duty qualified and trained!

The place where the installation will be carried out must be ready before the beginning of the
operations.
The necessary works for the routing of the power and control cables (drilling, channels, etc.)

F.1.2. Floor flatness and level


IMPORTANT!
To avoid improper functioning of doors, HSCB trolleys and associated shutters, the
cubicle assemblies must respect the following flatness and level tolerances!

F.1.3. Floor insulating principle


DANGER!
The DC cubicles must be mounted insulated from the floor. The connection of the
equipment to the main earth has to be made only in one point, foreseen for that purpose,
at the output of the low impedance relay.

The solution adopted by Sécheron SA for the earthing of the cubicles is the use of a low
impedance protection relay. This solution implies that the cubicles must be mounted insulated
from the floor to ensure a correct operation of the protection relay.
Recommended insulation value: > 100 kΩ.

This value ensures an optimum insulation, sending a maximum of the fault current through the
protection relay, guaranteeing the correct operation of the protection in case of a fault (voltage
presence in the frame). This insulation can be insured by an insulating sheet of 1-2 mm thick.
Another solution is the use of an automatic levelling insulating cement.

F.2. Before starting any work


Before starting any work, please control:
• Tools needed for this work are ready to be used (refer to F.5. Tools needed).
• Material needed (parts, screws, washers, nuts, etc.) is checked and closed to the cubicle to
be erected (refer to F.6. Installation material).
• People know and understand what they have to do.
• The place where the installation will be carried out must be ready before the beginning of the
installation operations.
• The necessary works for the routing of the power and control cables (drilling, channels, etc.)
must be completed (always refer to the layout drawings).

F.3. Important mechanical general rules


• Each time an alignment, a levelling or a mechanical setting is required, use systematically an
air level to guarantee the best result possible.
• Each time a part or a screw, a nut, etc. is loosen, please put it back in its place.
• Each time a screw or a nut is tighten at a mentioned torque range (refer to H.2.8. Checking
tightening, use a torque (Dynamometric) wrench and mark the bolt (e.g. with a red marker).
• Pay attention to the orientation for spring washer.

F.7. Opening cases

ff GENERALITIES
IMPORTANT!
Before opening the cases, verify with the packing list that the material has been transported
to the right place of installation!
Transportation of unpacked material is more difficult and should be reduced to minimum!
• Do not open the cases if you do not intend to proceed with installation on the final site.
• The packing protects the equipment. Do not open the sealed aluminum bag (if present) around
the equipment if you can’t guarantee correct indoor conditions around cubicles.
• The heating of the cubicles (if present) should be connected and switched on at least 48
hours after opening the aluminium bag. The heating will protect the electric, electronic and
mechanical equipment against condensation.
• Use supplementary heaters to maintain a dry air if necessary.
• Power supply of the appropriate voltage must be available in the neighbourhood of the
equipment.

ff OPENING
1. Make sure that the cases are opened in the right place of installation in a protected, dry and
clean location.
2. Identify the cases to open them in the order of installation (refer to the packing list and the
layout drawings).
IMPORTANT!
If the equipment must be unpacked outdoors, have some covers ready to protect the
equipment in case of bad climatic conditions!
3. If an aluminium bag is present, cut it carefully to remove it. Be careful not to damage the
cubicle surfaces (i.e. with a sharp knife) when removing the aluminium bag.
4. Check immediately the content of the cases with the detailed packing list.
–– The material is identified with labels or stickers.
–– Verify that all parts of the same substation are present.

The principle is the same regardless of the type of cubicle, MBS or SECUB-2, the following

Use the following Sécheron’s fixing kit to fix the enclosure into the floor: SG806195R5.

ff For each enclosure:


• Insert the plastic washer (1) into the centre of the Ø16 mm fixing holes.
• Pre-drill Ø 6 mm.
• Remove the plastic washer and drill:
–– Use a Ø 7.4 mm drill when drilling into a metal frame (2).
–– Use a Ø 10 mm drill when drilling into concrete (3).
• Use a vacuum cleaner.
• Insert the plastic washer (1), the washer (4) the screw and tighten.

The contact between the different copper plates has to be correct. The number and the
surface of the different copper plates have been carefully designed. Therefore, follow
these instructions carefully!

ff Main busbar - by-pass busbar


The transmission of the traction current through the Sécheron cubicles is done by means of
busbar, generally made of copper. The connection of the busbar sections between each cubicle
is made by means of fish-plates. The dimensioning of the busbar and the fish-plates depends

A plexiglass plate (2) is delivered and the holes have to be made by the customers depending on

The customer low-voltage connections (1) can be located either on the roof of the MBS cubicles,
when low-voltage connections are made individually for each cubicle (A), or on the interface/
negative panel (B).
In the case of low-voltage connections located on the interface or negative panel (B), the
connections between the MBS cubicles and the interface/negative panel must be reconnected,
by means of connectors (2). During the transportation, these connectors are located on the
interface or negative panel.

H.1. Safety precautions

Before starting any maintenance, ensure that no remote control is possible.
Proceed with the earthing of de-energized live parts so that work may be performed
without danger of electric shock.
Observe the instructions in B. Safety precautions section and comply scrupulously with
the applicable local regulations.

The recommendations concerning the periodicity of interventions for maintenance and control

H.2.2. Visual control
Carefully check for marks of burn or moisture which can lead to a serious defect.

H.2.3. Cleaning
Accumulation of dirt and dust on components acts as an insulating blanket preventing efficient
heat dissipation. Dust on circuit boards and wires can cause arcing and short-circuits, resulting
in damage to components or even cause equipment failure. Your equipment should be cleaned
to prevent it!
Dust can be removed using a dry rag, a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner.
To ensure the insulating power, it is necessary that the parts of insulating material are clean and
dry.
When cleaning, make sure that the lubrication of control mechanisms is maintained. If mechanisms
are not lubricated enough, lubrication must be renewed.

ff Slight soiling
Clean with a dry rag (non-fibrous), replace the rag quite often depending on the contamination.

ff Heavy soiling
Use of a cleaning product.
• Carefully read and follow manufacturer’s precautions and directions for use when handling
cleaning products.
• The operator must wear gloves and eye protection.
• Moisten the cloth and wipe shortly the parts of insulating material.

H.2.5. Insulation resistance test
ff TEST PURPOSE
This test is aimed at verifying the quality of the isolation of cubicles compared to a ground as part
of equipment installed in the arrangements (a) and (b) of EN 50123-7 with monitoring by current
relay (earth fault) with low impedance.

ff PROCEDURE
DANGER!
First, make sure that equipment to be tested as well as the work area is safe, that
equipment is turned off and disconnected and that all safety measures have been taken!

a. Open all the mini circuit breakers of the auxiliary circuits of the equipment to be tested.
b. Disconnect the connection between the substation earth (2) and the earth of the equipment
(3) at the output of the low impedance relay (1).
c. Connect the insulation resistance meter (4) between the earth of the equipment (3) and the
substation earth (2), through the low impedance relay (1).
d. Apply the test voltage (at least during 60 seconds to allow the measured current to stabilize)
and check the value of the insulation resistance.
e. If the result is incorrect, look for the cause of the insulation problem, fix it and repeat the test.
It is better to connect the positive to the substation earth and the negative onto the cubicles, in
order to help prevent polarization of the earth.

H.2.6. Prevent condensation
To ensure the insulation properties, the cubicle must be free from condensation.

ff Measures in case of condensation


• If condensation is detected in a cubicle, the cubicle should be cleaned (refer to H.2.3. Cleaning).
• Check the proper operation of the heating of the cubicle, check the value of the thermostat
and/or hygrostat of the heating.
• If the cubicle has no heating, consider the installation of a heater to prevent condensation.

H.2.7. Treatment of screwed contact surfaces


Only in case of disassembly of the busbars.

Clean the contact surfaces just before to reassemble them (according to Table 4). Immediately
after the treatment, spread a thin and uniform coat of contact grease.

Most of the components are mounted on a DIN rail and are easily removable using a screwdriver
(2) as shown below.
Installation is done by clipping on to the DIN rail (1).

ff ISOLATED AMPLIFIERS, MEASURING RELAYS


Isolated amplifiers – such as current measuring relay MIU10 (1) and voltage measuring relays
VM10 and VM12 (2) – are mounted on a DIN rail (3).

For replacement of these components, refer to Common equipment.


The isolated amplifiers MIU10, VM10 and VM12 are configured according to the characteristics
of the measuring circuits. Before installing a new amplifier, it is necessary to set it according to
the data given in the appropriate electric drawings and according to the instructions given on the
corresponding instructions manual.

• Disconnect the auxiliary power supply.
• Remove all connectors from the SEPCOS.
• Disassemble the SEPCOS: 4 screws / washers (1).

accordingly.

H.2.10. Protection against corrosion
The chassis and the unpainted sheet metal parts are protected against corrosion (Aluzinc). Steel
parts are galvanized.
IMPORTANT!
Of paint damage, scratches or other damage must be repaired immediately to avoid
corrosion!

• Remove all tools and aids used.
• Reinsert the corresponding trolleys into their cubicles.

H.3. Racking in and out of the MBS HSCB trolley
WARNING!
Before to rack in or out the trolley, the circuit breaker must be switched OFF according to
your operating rules!

H.3.1. Procedure to rack-in the HSCB trolley


a. Check that all power circuits are OFF and that the circuit breaker is ready to operate accurately.
b. Check that the locking mechanism is in “unlocked” position (1) on both sides.
c. Push by hands the trolley into the cubicle until it stops into its place (2).
d. Pass the locking mechanism in “locked” position (3) on both sides.
e. Plug the umbilical chord onto the circuit breaker connection (4).
f. Close the door and lock it.
g. Push the red manual trip push button (5), move the lever (6) to the left and release the red
button.
h. Insert the crank handle into the mask (7).
i. Turn the crank handle counter clockwise (8) until it stops (without forcing).
j. Check the correct position (service) through the control window (9).
k. Remove the crank handle from the mask.
l. Push the red manual trip push button (5), move the lever (6) to the right and release the red
button.
m. The trolley is now in service position and is ready to be switched ON. The door cannot be
opened.

ff INSERTION OF THE TROLLEY WITH THE DRAWER
• Place the drawer in front of the cubicle.
• Partially insert the trolley into the cubicle enough to move the stopper (see Extraction of the
trolley with the drawer).
• Pull the trolley towards you to check if it is locked in the cubicle, if it is not, repeat the above
procedure of inserting the trolley further into the cell.

ff MAINTENANCE TROLLEY
• Remove the maintenance trolley by proceeding inversely to the instructions described in
chapter Setting up the maintenance trolley.
• Replace the knurled nuts on the trolley.
• The drawer is now in TEST position.

ff DRAWER INSERTION
• Replace the front insulation.

Service and maintenance Installation recommendations


• Push the drawer into the cubicle with two hands until it is completely inserted.
Be careful when inserting the drawer, DO NOT pull the locking mechanism as described in section
Extraction of the trolley with the drawer.

• Depending on option chosen, the drawer can be locked with a key or a lock, make sure the
trolley is locked in accordance with your operating rules.

• Close the door.


• The drawer is now in SERVICE position.
